JCX is a group active and reactive power control system for a hydropower plant, that is, secondary joint control of units. The operator sets one plant power setpoint, and the controller itself distributes it between the units, taking into account their limits and efficiency. The system is installed at hydropower and pumped-storage plants with several units and at hydropower cascades, including with governors from other manufacturers.

Description
Without group control, the operator manually sets power setpoints for each unit according to the plant's overall dispatch schedule. JCX takes this work off the operator: the controller calculates unit setpoints so as to obtain the highest generation efficiency without exceeding the limits of any unit. Operation of the hydropower plant becomes simpler, more efficient and safer. The system is built on the same hardware platform as the same manufacturer's excitation systems and turbine governors. The design is modular, the software is configurable, and the system is certified to the main electromagnetic compatibility standards.
JCX consists of a dedicated hardware unit and a human-machine interface. It connects to governors of the same or other manufacturers by protocols or through analog and discrete inputs and outputs, so it can be installed at plants with a mixed fleet of governors. Functions include even or optimized load distribution, secondary frequency control, positive and negative spinning reserve for frequency events and large load changes, and a safe operating zone configurable for each unit. Operation can be per individual unit, per group of units or for the whole plant. Control modes include busbar voltage (group voltage control), active power (group load control) and reactive power sharing.
The interface shows the main process signals at a high polling rate and supports several access levels. The recorder and event log are synchronized with GPS via IRIG-B, NTP or PTP, recording resolution is 1 ms, and eight configurable triggers record signals before and after an event. With the plant control system and PLCs the system exchanges data over IEC 61850 GOOSE/MMS, DNP3.0 over Ethernet, IEC 60870-5-101 or Modbus TCP/IP.
The next level is provided by the unit dispatch optimization system. Based on real-time measurements and optimization models, it takes into account efficiency curves, operating ranges and various operating characteristics of unit groups, gross head, head losses, planned and forced unit outages, inflow forecast and hydraulic coupling with neighboring plants in the cascade. It can perform dispatching automatically or operate as an operator decision support tool. It is used at hydropower and pumped-storage plants with several units and at hydropower cascades.
