iRTU, iRTUe, UPDM — substation remote terminal units (RTU)

iRTU, iRTUe and UPDM are a line of remote terminal units (RTU) for automation of substations and generation facilities. The iRTU controller collects data and converts protocols, iRTUe expands input/output over IEC 61850 GOOSE, and UPDM works in the Terna protection plan.

Description

iRTU are modular RTUs often installed as substation controllers for data collection when additional gateway functions are needed, along with capabilities such as load shedding or time stamps with microsecond accuracy. The controllers have built-in Ethernet switches and internal input/output modules, so a facility can be controlled by one compact device. iRTU presents serial devices as IEC 61850 logical nodes, collects and processes data from both old and new IEDs, exchanges data directly with the control center over standard protocols (IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3) and converts protocols, including Modbus to IEC 61850, IEC 101 to IEC 104, Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP and IEC 103 to DNP3.

The built-in switch has two 10/100BaseTX ports and two optical FX100 ports with RSTP/PRP/HSR redundancy. Up to four Ethernet ports and four serial ports are available, and built-in 4G, 3G and GPRS modems are installed optionally. Automation is programmed per IEC 61131-3.

iRTUe are remote input/output expansion modules that use IEC 61850 GOOSE exchange for distributed signal collection and command output. The modules support interlocking and load shedding and transmit GOOSE messages in less than 3 ms, which corresponds to class P2/3 type 1A. Two input/output boards with digital and analog inputs and relays are configured in each module. Connection is made through two Ethernet ports (RJ45, ST, SC) or an EXP422 serial port, and synchronization runs via IEEE 1588 (PTP) or NTP, so the modules suit the substation process bus. Data is modeled through GGIO or custom SCL files, and power quality measurement is performed by the dedicated iRTUe-Q module.

For the Italian network, a version meeting the requirements of the operator Terna is produced. The iRTU per the Terna specification is intended for observability of facilities with voltage from 50 kV and of generation connected to the networks. UPDM is a peripheral device of the protection and monitoring plan that receives measurements and signals from local protection and control systems and executes trip and generation curtailment commands from messages of the central Terna protection system over a protocol based on IEC 60870-5-104. It is used at substations of distribution and transmission networks, at solar and wind power plants and at industrial energy facilities.

Questions and answers

Which protocols does iRTU support for communication with the control center?

IEC 60870-5-104 and DNP3, as well as IEC 61850, IEC 101, IEC 103 and Modbus. The controller converts protocols, for example Modbus to IEC 61850 or IEC 101 to IEC 104.

How fast does iRTUe transmit GOOSE messages?

In less than 3 ms. The modules support interlocking and load shedding, and time is synchronized via IEEE 1588 (PTP).

Which ports does the iRTU switch have?

Two 10/100BaseTX ports and two optical FX100 ports with RSTP/PRP/HSR redundancy. In total up to four Ethernet ports and four serial ports are available.
