IPR-A / IPR-A2 / IPR-D / IPR96D overcurrent and earth fault protection relays for MV feeders
IPR microprocessor-based overcurrent and earth fault relays for MV feeders with functions 50, 51, 50N and 51N. IPR-A2 adds auto-reclosing, while IPR-D and IPR96D monitor zero-sequence current only. The relays work with 1 A or 5 A CTs and have Modbus RTU ports.

Description
The IPR series covers microprocessor-based current protection relays for medium-voltage lines and feeders. IPR-A protects against overcurrents and short circuits between phases and to earth, including under disturbed network conditions. The relay measures the current of each phase from current transformers and operates on a selected ANSI, IAC or IEC characteristic. IPR-A2 has the same set of functions plus automatic reclosing. IPR-D and IPR96D measure only zero-sequence current and work as earth fault protection.
The relay is installed as main or backup protection of feeders in distribution networks, power plants and industrial networks, as well as transformers, overhead and cable lines and generators. In schemes with a load break switch or disconnector, the IPR issues a trip command only within the switching capacity of the device and leaves short circuits to the fuses.
IPR-A performs instantaneous overcurrent protection for phases (50) and earth (50N/50G) and inverse time overcurrent protection for phases (51) and earth (51N/51G). Curves are taken from the ANSI, IAC and IEC/BS142 families, including moderately, normally, very and extremely inverse, plus definite time. A separate level signals overload. The relay sums the interrupted current in kA for each phase, and this counter is used to estimate circuit breaker wear.
The CT ratio is set in steps of 5 A over a primary current range of 10 to 6000 A, and for IPR-D the lower limit is 5 A. The inputs are designed for 1 A or 5 A. The outputs are one trip relay, two programmable auxiliary relays (three in IPR-D) and a relay for loss of supply or internal fault. There are four digital inputs, one for breaker position and three programmable, and breaker failure on tripping is also monitored.
LEDs and an LCD show phase and earth currents, the cause of the last trip and stored fault values, and separate LEDs indicate operation of stages 50/50N and 51/51N. Settings are entered from the touch keypad or remotely through RS-232 and two RS-485 ports with Modbus RTU, and an Ethernet version is available to order. The manufacturer's dry-type or cast-resin current transformers are used together with the relay.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between IPR-A, IPR-A2 and IPR-D?
IPR-A provides phase and earth overcurrent protection with functions 50, 51, 50N/50G and 51N/51G. IPR-A2 additionally has auto-reclosing, while IPR-D and IPR96D protect only against earth faults using zero-sequence current.
Which current transformers does the relay work with?
The inputs are designed for a secondary current of 1 A or 5 A. The CT primary current is set within 10–6000 A in steps of 5 A, and from 5 A for IPR-D.
Which time delay characteristics are available?
The ANSI, IAC and IEC/BS142 families with moderately, normally, very and extremely inverse curves, as well as a definite time characteristic.
