iBridge — data transmission over existing substation wiring (iBridge, Gateway, eXtender)

iBridge is a data transmission system at substations that uses conductors of AC or DC wiring already in place. Inductive couplers inject the signal into the existing wires and carry serial and Ethernet data from intelligent devices, telecontrol and cameras. No trenches, permits or new cables are needed, nor wireless antenna systems with their security risks.

Description

Laying communication channels at a live substation is expensive and time-consuming. iBridge avoids this problem by using the existing wiring, and the equipment is installed in a few minutes. Circuit diagrams usually do not need to be changed. Trenches for new cables and work permits become unnecessary, and the associated costs disappear with them. Signal couplers with a latch are fitted around the wire, available with cores of 9, 13, 18 and 25 mm (IND2000N, IND2020N, IND2040N, IND2100N).

The range consists of three devices. The iBridge (CE-520) creates a TCP/IP network over any existing wire, connecting remote devices with computers, gateways and routers, and converts DNP or Modbus data from serial format to the same protocol over TCP/IP. The Gateway (CE-530) organises a multipoint network, serves to configure and monitor the iBridge system and exchanges data between the local network and the chosen signal wire. The eXtender (CE-540) amplifies the signal when the distance between devices is limited by wire quality or routing. Two iBridge units work point to point, and several are combined into a network through a Gateway. For the point-to-point arrangement, the KIT-520 kit is produced with two iBridge units and two 9 mm couplers.

All devices are powered from 48–250 V DC or 100–240 V AC 50/60 Hz through an IEC-320-C5 connector and are supplied with a 1.83 m mains cord with a NEMA 5-15 plug. Dimensions 152 × 109 × 28 mm, weight 544 g, operating temperature from −40 to +70 °C. The system works with DNP, Modbus, IEC 61850 and proprietary protocols, and 128-bit encryption improves channel security. Accessories include RS-232 adapters for 9 and 25 pins, a universal RS-232/RS-485 adapter and a DIN rail mounting kit.

A typical application is connecting transformer and bushing monitors to the dispatch centre without a new cable or optical fibre. The iBridge option is provided in the B100 and DTM monitors. In the B100 an IND2000N 9 mm coupler is used, and on the dispatch side a new or existing iBridge (CE-520) or Gateway (CE-530) receives the data. Compact housings and standard supply ranges simplify installation at operating facilities and shorten project timelines.

Questions and answers

Over which wires does the iBridge transmit data?

Over any existing AC or DC wiring at the substation. The signal is injected with inductive couplers with 9, 13, 18 or 25 mm cores.

Which protocols does the iBridge system support?

DNP, Modbus, IEC 61850 and proprietary protocols, with 128-bit encryption. The iBridge also converts serial DNP or Modbus data to the same protocol over TCP/IP.

What power do the iBridge, Gateway and eXtender devices need?

48–250 V DC or 100–240 V AC 50/60 Hz through an IEC-320-C5 connector. Operating temperature is from −40 to +70 °C, and each device weighs 544 g.
