Description
The water level controller automatically keeps the reservoir level at set values and distributes the flow according to function priorities. The system is fully automated, so the operator does not control the level manually. At the same time the controller takes into account the demand for electricity and environmental restrictions, and the plant operating mode is not reduced to simply holding a level mark. The aim of the system is safe and economical operation of the reservoir and discharge structures. Function priorities determine what takes precedence at any moment, be it holding the level, the demand for electricity or environmental restrictions.
The design is modular and scalable. The block structure gives high flexibility, so the system can be assembled for a plant of any size, with any number of turbines and gates. This is convenient both for a new hydro scheme and for electrical modernization of an existing one, when the composition of units or gates changes but the water level requirements remain. The parameters are tuned for the specific site. The manufacturer's specialists carry out fine tuning that takes into account turbine discharge capacity, gate characteristics, operating requirements and water use rules. It is this that determines how the controller behaves in real plant operating modes.
At run-of-river plants level control is especially important from the environmental point of view. Sharp fluctuations of the level and flow in the tailwater affect the river ecosystem, so these parameters must be kept within set limits. An example of application is the electrical modernization of the 15 MW Djupdal run-of-river hydropower plant in Norway for Glitre Energi, carried out using the manufacturer's own level controller.
The controller is used together with the HPG digital turbine governor and the unit and plant automation. For hydropower plants the manufacturer also offers other automation components, namely the eHPG hybrid turbine governor, machine protection, power control, cybersecurity, central control room systems and the VECOS control system. On the electrical side these include VEDA and VECTOR switchgear, VEBA and VECTOR busbar trunking, and VEMA static and brushless excitation systems. The level controller is built into this overall power plant automation structure and does not work separately from the rest of the equipment.
