Description

The manufacturer builds control and protection systems for hydro power plants, namely automatic unit control panels, integrated panels for typical hydro plants and digital generator protection relays. All of this is intended for new and modernised hydro and pumped storage plants, including for remote control of stations. An example is the Omarugawa pumped storage plant with 310 MW variable-speed pump-turbines, for which the manufacturer supplied an automatic panel. Panels and relays are part of the overall plant design, in which the manufacturer also supplies the turbine, hydro generator, excitation system and auxiliary equipment.

The automatic control panel receives commands from the central dispatch point or control point and performs the start and stop of the generator-turbine unit. The power supply units and the central processor are redundant, and the I/O module is a single configuration. The panel with the processor is installed in the switchgear room, and the remote I/O panel directly in the machine hall. The panels are connected by an optical cable, so fewer control cables are needed. The customer of this project is Kyushu Electric. Such a layout is convenient when the machine hall and the switchgear room are located separately.

The integrated panel for typical hydro plants combines functions that used to be distributed across the station: the generator instrument panel, relay protection panels, automation, auxiliary systems, automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and governor control. The number of panels becomes noticeably smaller, which simplifies installation and maintenance of the switchgear room. The panel is built on a universal controller supplemented with the manufacturer's own fast and accurate rotational speed measurement module.

The digital protection relay for hydro plants meets the noise immunity requirements of the Japanese electric power standard B402. Its compact design allows analysis of waveforms when protection operates and faster finding of the cause of a fault. The protection logic is set by software to the customer's requirements and can be changed without reworking the relay hardware.

The operator works with a touch panel of the manufacturer's own design. It collects instruments, indicators and control keys, shows the reasons for sequence blocking, and frequently changed settings are adjusted without service tools. Auxiliary equipment (generator circuit breakers, isolated phase busducts, disconnectors, excitation and station service transformers, distribution panels) can also be supplied by the manufacturer as a package.

Questions and answers

What functions does the integrated panel for a typical hydro plant combine?

Measurement, generator protection, automation, AVR and governor control in one panel. Noticeably fewer panels are needed.

To which standard is the noise immunity of the digital relay verified?

To the Japanese electric power standard B402.

How are the panel with the processor and the remote I/O panel connected?

By optical cable. This reduces the number of control cables between the switchgear room and the machine hall.
