Description
HyCon GoDigital is a digital speed and power governor for hydro turbines, part of the HyCon automation family together with the plant control system and the Thyricon excitation system. The quality of control of a hydro unit and of the energy it produces is largely determined by the turbine governor. The manufacturer has developed and built the main components of governors for more than 120 years, and more than 18 500 of its complete turbine governors have been installed worldwide.
The governor implements all the modes required for turbines of any type: speed, power, water level and flow control, pump mode, primary and secondary frequency control, and island mode. It provides high dynamics and fast response to a step input, stability of the control loop both for setpoint changes and disturbances, suppression of pressure oscillations in complex penstocks, surge prevention functions, individual servomotor control, multi-nozzle control of Pelton turbines, optimization of the combinator relationship and of the Kaplan blade movement. The interaction with the Thyricon excitation system is coordinated, and the combined version is offered as HyCon PowerDuo.
The hardware is built on SIMATIC S7 components, a widespread industrial standard with worldwide availability of spare parts and support. The software runs on TIA Portal, Step7 and WinCC flexible, so plant engineers work in a familiar environment. The governor is modular and flexible, and supports various redundancy concepts, hardware and software diagnostics in the controller, parameter changes without engineering tools, independent local control and remote access.
Open interfaces, including IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, make it possible to integrate the governor into third-party systems at both new and existing hydro plants. The governor operates in fully automatic mode, and the operator receives detailed information on the state of the turbine and governor at local and remote stations, including dispatch centres. The delivery includes electro-hydraulic converters controlling the servomotors, control valves up to DN 200 and TSM 6 moving-coil servo valves with a quick-stop device, as well as HyCon GoActuate and GoHybrid hydraulic systems. Applications are new hydro and pumped storage plants and replacement of obsolete mechanical-hydraulic and analogue governors.

Questions and answers
Which control modes are implemented in HyCon GoDigital?
Speed, power, water level and flow control, pump mode, primary and secondary frequency control, and island mode.
What hardware platform is the governor built on?
On SIMATIC S7 components, and the software runs on TIA Portal, Step7 and WinCC flexible. Integration with third-party systems is via IEC 60870-5-101/103/104.
Can the governor be installed at an existing hydro plant?
Yes, the open interfaces make it possible to integrate it at both new and existing hydro plants, including when replacing obsolete mechanical-hydraulic and analogue governors.
