Description
The control and supervisory system (SCADA) is designed for hydropower plants and pumped storage plants of all types and sizes. It combines the manufacturer's experience in hydro units with expertise in control systems; more than 7000 complete automation systems have been delivered to almost 3200 hydropower plants worldwide. The system is used both at new facilities and in refurbishments, for example in the control room of the Reisach pumped storage plant (Germany).
The basis of the system is a library of function blocks specific to hydropower. The full set of SCADA functions is implemented: control of units and auxiliary equipment, plant-wide control, sequence-of-events recording, and alarm prioritisation and tracking for fast root-cause analysis. Redundancy scales at the level of PLCs, network, servers and I/O, and distributed server configurations are used for multi-unit plants and complex auxiliary power systems. According to the manufacturer, system availability exceeds 99.9 %. Ergonomic mimic diagrams keep the operator focused on what matters, and independent local control is retained.
The architecture is open and modular, with no dependence on a single supplier. Open interfaces connect existing equipment, third-party systems and IT systems at MES, ERP and CMMS level; the IEC 61850, DNP3 (over TCP and serial) and Modbus protocols are supported. Turbine governors, excitation systems, plant control and auxiliary power control are built on one platform, which reduces engineering, training and maintenance costs and unifies the range of spare parts. Each component can also be used separately. Support covers spare parts, changes to system functions, a telephone line, remote diagnostics and regular on-site maintenance (backups, alarm checks, assistance after a major overhaul of a unit).
Cybersecurity is built into the architecture. Functions not needed for operation are disabled or removed, for example USB access, and network functions are reduced to a minimum for each project. Critical infrastructure standards, including ISO/IEC 27002, and the requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act are taken into account. For refurbishment, migration concepts fitted to the unit outage window, pre-tested configurations and phased commissioning are offered, along with a defined product life cycle with a clear upgrade path. The system can be extended with condition monitoring options (including cavitation and radar air gap monitoring), digital condition assessment and a fleet overview of stations.
