HIPASE-P and DRS: protection relays for generators, transformers, busbars and lines
HIPASE-P is a digital protection for generators and transformers with over 100 functions for frequencies of 50, 60 and 16.7 Hz. The DRS relay family complements it with protection of busbars, lines, cables and feeders. The equipment is installed at hydropower plants, pumped-storage plants, thermal power plants, substations and in industrial grids, both at new sites and when replacing old protection.

Description
Electrical protection limits equipment damage during overloads and short circuits in generators, transformers, auxiliary systems, on busbars, outgoing lines and cables. The manufacturer has more than 40 years of experience in power plant protection. HIPASE-P is built modularly, and the set of functions for a particular unit is selected from a list. The algorithms are taken from the proven DRS family and refined for new generation requirements.
A separate application board forms and processes analog signals for special functions. These include rotor earth fault protection, stator earth fault protection using a frequency-shifted signal injection method, shaft current protection with harmonic analysis, overcurrent and earth fault protection of the static starting converter (SFC), and temperature measurement. With this set, complex units are protected, including pump-turbines of pumped-storage plants and large thermal units.
The analog part has 12/24 CT inputs for 1 and 5 A and 8/16 VT inputs for 100-125 V. Wide-range binary inputs for 24-250 V DC can number 8-64, and outputs 8-72. The compact 1/2 19″ housing holds up to 32 inputs and 36 outputs, and for larger signal volumes a full 19″ one is used. The engineering tool has a software trip matrix and test inputs, and automatically generates the project and screen forms. Communication with the process control system is per IEC 61850 Ed 2.0, IEC 60870-5-103/-104 and Modbus TCP. Combined with a synchronizer, the device is called HIPASE-PS.
The DRS family includes several relays. DRS-COMPACT2A with a keypad and LCD is installed at medium and large plants. DRS-LIGHT has the smallest dimensions and works at small plants, generators, transformers, feeders and busbars, and also as backup protection and in industry. DRS-BB performs distributed numerical low-impedance differential busbar protection of almost any configuration, and a redundant optical bus gives a typical trip time of 15 ms. DRS-LLD protects overhead lines and cables with up to 6 ends, and a transformer can be included in the zone. All DRS relays have the same local setting principle and can be controlled from remote points. The DRS-WIN program serves all relay versions and supports remote diagnostics.

Questions and answers
What grid frequencies is HIPASE-P suitable for?
HIPASE-P works at 50, 60 and 16.7 Hz. The modular structure contains over 100 generator and transformer protection functions.
How many binary inputs and outputs does the device have?
In the compact 1/2 19″ housing up to 32 binary inputs and 36 outputs are processed. In total the device supports 8-64 inputs and 8-72 outputs, and for larger volumes a full 19″ housing is used.
What trip time does the DRS-BB busbar differential protection give?
The typical trip time of DRS-BB is 15 ms. The protection is distributed and low-impedance, and the bay and central units are linked by a redundant optical bus.
