HighPROTEC MRI4 overcurrent and earth fault protection
HighPROTEC MRI4 is a digital overcurrent and earth fault protection terminal for medium voltage networks. Six phase and four earth stages with DEFT, ANSI and IEC characteristics work in networks with isolated, compensated, resistance-earthed and solidly earthed neutral.

Description
MRI4 from the HighPROTEC line combines three-phase protection stages against overload, short circuits and earth faults with inverse (INV) and definite time (DEFT) delay characteristics. The relay works in networks with isolated, resonant-earthed (compensated), resistance-earthed and solidly earthed neutral. It is installed in radial networks and open ring networks with single-ended supply, and also as backup protection to differential protections of generators, transformers, busbars and lines.
Phase non-directional overcurrent and short circuit protection has six stages, and non-directional earth fault protection has four. The set of characteristics includes DEFT, ANSI (MINV, VINV, EINV), IEC (NINV, VINV, LINV, EINV), Thermal Flat, IT, I2T, I4T, and for earth fault protection also RXIDG. They are complemented by two load unbalance protection stages, a thermal model, inrush current blocking, THD protection and recording of peak and average current values. For overhead lines the terminal is available with optional auto-reclosing. The functions are adapted to VDE-AR-N 4110:2023-09.
Supervision functions cover current transformers, breaker failure protection, the trip circuit, cold load pickup and switch onto fault acceleration. For commissioning there are plausibility checks of settings, adaptive parameter sets, status display, RMS and fundamental (DFT) values with statistics, hiding of unused functions and a multi-level password system. The terminal controls one circuit breaker and keeps a record of its wear.
The hardware is based on a dual-core processor. The Modbus, Profibus, DNP3.0, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103 and IEC 60870-5-104 protocols support individual data point assignment, time is synchronized via SNTP and IRIG-B, and cybersecurity functions are included. Non-volatile recorders store waveforms for 120 s, 20 faults, 300 events and a trend of 4000 records. Smart view, waveform analysis and all protection functions are included in the delivery at no extra charge under the all-inclusive concept. MRI4 is most often installed in outgoing and incoming cells of 6–35 kV switchgear, on cable and overhead lines and on transformer feeders.

Questions and answers
What neutral earthing modes is MRI4 suitable for?
For networks with isolated, resonant-earthed, resistance-earthed and solidly earthed neutral. Earth fault protection has four stages with DEFT, ANSI, IEC and RXIDG characteristics.
Does MRI4 have an auto-reclosing function?
Yes, for overhead line protection the terminal is available with optional automatic reclosing.
Can MRI4 be used as backup protection?
Yes, the relay is used as backup protection to differential protections of generators, transformers, busbars and lines. The six phase overcurrent stages have inverse and definite time characteristics.
