ESD-201, ESD-202 — energy storage units for supplying breaker trip circuits
ESD-201 and ESD-202 are energy storage devices that supply the trip circuits of circuit breakers where there is no station battery. The stored energy is enough to trip a breaker for up to 72 hours after AC voltage disappears.
- Function
- AC to DC conversion and energy storage for breaker tripping
- Energy storage time
- up to 72 h after AC supply is removed
- Construction
- compound encapsulated

Description
When there is no station battery, the breaker trip circuit must still operate during a fault. The energy for the trip coil must be stored in advance, and this is the function of the ESD-201 and ESD-202. If AC voltage has disappeared, the stored energy still allows the breaker to be tripped and the fault removed from the network. The device converts the input AC voltage to DC and stores energy sufficient to trip the breaker for up to 72 hours after AC voltage disappears. In this way fault clearing and relay protection operation are maintained in critical situations, and the need for traditional battery backup systems is reduced.
The construction is robust, and the devices are encapsulated in compound, which is well suited to harsh operating conditions. An LED indicator shows that enough energy has been stored for a breaker operation, so the readiness of the trip circuit is visible without additional measurements. The ESD-201 accepts several input voltage values, which simplifies its use in different schemes. The ESD-202 is the second version of the range. In the manufacturer's catalog the ESD-201 is designated number 9110600101 and the ESD-202 number 9290500100.
Typical applications are switchgear and substations without batteries, switchgear cells with self-powered BE1-50/51 overcurrent relays and breakers with shunt trip, and remote network installations. In such schemes the relay detects the fault and the stored energy powers the trip circuit. For a switchgear cell this means the self-powered relay and the breaker with shunt trip receive an energy source for tripping without a separate battery and charger. This is convenient at remote installations where there is no station battery. The indicator status is checked during inspection and maintenance of the cell.
When choosing between versions, the input voltage of the circuit to which the device is connected and the required number of voltage values are clarified. The breaker trip parameters and the scheme of the switchgear cell are also checked against the device's capabilities when ordering. For the ESD-201 this is more convenient, because it works with several input voltage values. The devices are designed and manufactured at plants in Highland, Illinois and Taylor, Texas.

Questions and answers
How long do the ESD-201 and ESD-202 keep energy for tripping?
The stored energy is enough to trip a breaker for up to 72 hours after AC voltage disappears.
Where are the ESD-201 and ESD-202 used?
At switching points and substations without batteries, in switchgear cells with self-powered BE1-50/51 relays and breakers with shunt trip, and at remote network installations.
How do the ESD-201 and ESD-202 differ and how is readiness shown?
The ESD-201 accepts several input voltage values, and the ESD-202 is the second version of the range. An LED indicator shows that enough energy has been stored for a breaker operation.
