EMS — energy management system for BESS storage: EMS Master Controller and EMS BESS Controller
EMS (Energy Management System) is a hardware and software system for monitoring, controlling and optimizing the operation of BESS energy storage systems. It coordinates storage with solar and wind power plants, the grid, and diesel and gas generators in grid-connected, off-grid and hybrid modes. The system has two levels, EMS Master Controller and EMS BESS Controller.
- Levels
- EMS Master Controller; EMS BESS Controller
- Modes
- on-grid, off-grid, hybrid; FTM and BTM
- Sources
- BESS, solar, wind, hydro, thermal, diesel and gas generators, grid
- Functions
- arbitrage, peak shaving, U/f regulation, renewables support, black start, backup, battery life extension, N-1

Description
The tasks of the EMS include peak shaving, scheduling of energy delivery, power smoothing, backup power, black start after a blackout, island mode and microgrids while meeting the requirements of grid operators. Applications range from front-of-the-meter (FTM) projects, that is, standalone storage and hybrid plants, to behind-the-meter (BTM) projects, where the EMS coordinates several sources and equipment to supply critical loads and data centers.
EMS Master Controller optimizes all available sources (solar, wind, hydro, thermal and diesel generation) for a given objective, for example reducing the operation of polluting sources, economic result or uninterrupted supply. It decides when to charge and discharge the batteries, manages the generation of several sources and load priorities, and works on external commands or autonomously. The controller integrates with virtual power plants (VPP), transmission and distribution system operators (TSO/DSO) and DERMS systems, supervises protection relays and the point of connection, and the built-in PPC functions perform dynamic limits according to the grid code. Its functions include price arbitrage, peak demand reduction, voltage and frequency regulation as ancillary services, support for renewables under export limits, backup, extension of battery service life and supply of critical loads under the N-1 criterion.
EMS BESS Controller manages several storage units on commands from EMS Master, VPP, DERMS or PPC. It works as an abstraction layer, accepts external commands and controls field devices, namely PCS converters and battery management systems (BMS). To the upper level the whole plant looks like a single storage unit with a given behavior, regardless of the number and manufacturer of the installed equipment. The controller runs the start and stop sequences of the whole plant, of parts of it or of individual units, equalizes the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries and distributes active power among the PCS taking into account their characteristics, SOC and battery state of health (SOH). This is needed when expanding, upgrading or adding converters of different power to a plant. The control cycle execution time is under 60 ms, which meets the requirements of markets with demanding response times.
The system is used on utility-scale and standalone storage connected to the distribution or transmission grid, on industrial storage, in hybrid plants, microgrids and data centers. The EMS is accredited by the Brazilian development bank BNDES (FINAME) and has been applied in one of the first hybrid "BESS plus solar plant" projects in Finland.

Questions and answers
What energy sources does the EMS work with?
With BESS storage, solar, wind and hydroelectric plants, thermal generation, diesel and gas generators and the grid. Operating modes are grid-connected, off-grid and hybrid, for FTM and BTM projects.
Can PCS and BMS from different manufacturers be combined into one plant?
Yes, EMS BESS Controller logically combines converters and battery management systems into a single storage unit regardless of their number and manufacturer. Active power is distributed taking into account the SOC and SOH of the batteries.
How fast is the EMS control loop?
The control cycle execution time of EMS BESS Controller is under 60 ms. This meets the requirements of markets with demanding response times.
