BELplus ARN / BELplus SZR — OLTC automatic voltage regulation and ATS controllers for MV/HV substations
BELplus ARN and BELplus SZR are substation automation controllers on the common BELplus hardware platform. ARN controls the on-load tap changer of two- and three-winding transformers and maintains the set network voltage. SZR performs automatic transfer switching in high, medium and low voltage switchgear.
- ARN
- automatic voltage regulation of OLTC transformers (two- and three-winding)
- SZR

Description
The ARN panel graphically shows the tap position number, the switching counter, the measured voltages and currents, the direction of the current voltage deviation from the setpoint, the set voltage as a percentage of Un, the signalling of the OLTC end positions and the state of the drive. The controller works in automatic, manual remote (from the control center) and manual local modes, and the mode is changed locally or remotely. In manual mode the OLTC position can be changed remotely.
The automation is blocked at an excessive voltage drop, and at an excessive voltage rise it gives a signal or is blocked. The setpoint can be changed on a schedule. Separate blockings operate when the OLTC has not responded or has responded incorrectly, and when the circuit breaker in the transformer circuit is open. Current compensation maintains the required voltage at the end of the line, and the switching time varies depending on the size of the deviation. ARN works with external position indicators in binary code or BCD and signals when a set number of switchings is exceeded. The controller sends position changes, blockings, alarms and measurements to the windEX remote monitoring system.
BELplus SZR monitors the voltages on the busbars and, optionally, the backup voltages on the feeder lines or on the HV side of the transformers. For this there are 8 voltage measurement inputs with transformer isolation, with a range up to 130 V. A typical scheme has two incomers and two busbar sections with a bus-section breaker, with hidden or explicit standby (1, 2). The algorithm is built on programmable logic modules, so it can easily be reconfigured for non-standard schemes, for example more than two incomers, a line with a generator, or ATS with monitoring of the voltage difference between the main and standby circuits. Switching can be continuous or with a dead time (slow ATS), and automatic return to the main supply and scheduled switching are available. The automation is blocked by protections, the position of disconnectors and faults in the measuring path, and it can be blocked manually from the panel, by a button or remotely.
Both controllers keep an event log and a disturbance recorder, and have two-channel communication with SCADA and a remote engineering channel. The protocols are IEC 61850, DNP 3.0, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, Modbus RTU, DLMS and IEC 1107. The supply is 24–48 or 110–220 V DC, the consumption is not more than 22 W. The aluminium profile enclosure is flush-mounted, surface-mounted or on a TS-35 DIN rail, with dimensions up to 218 × 218 × 185 mm and a weight of up to 5 kg. The degree of protection is IP20, the operating temperature is from −10 to +55 °C, the humidity is up to 95 %.

Questions and answers
What operating modes does the BELplus ARN regulator have?
Automatic, manual remote from the control center and manual local. The mode is changed locally or remotely, and the automation is blocked at an excessive voltage drop.
Which ATS schemes does BELplus SZR support?
A typical scheme with two incomers and two busbar sections with a bus-section breaker in the hidden or explicit standby mode (1, 2). Non-standard schemes, for example with a generator or more than two incomers, are implemented on programmable logic.
What supply and protocols do the controllers have?
The supply is 24–48 or 110–220 V DC, the consumption is up to 22 W. The protocols are IEC 61850, DNP 3.0, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, Modbus RTU, DLMS and IEC 1107.
