BE1-FLEX is a configurable protection, automation and control system for power systems. One device monitors up to 28 current transformers and controls up to 30 circuit breakers, and when needed it works as a logic controller without protection functions.

Description
The BE1-FLEX device can be configured for practically any application in the power system. It supports any combination of the available functions, and capabilities are added without dismantling. Additional functions are switched on, boards are changed or upgraded, software options are updated in the field, and the firmware is updated safely. A large configurable touch screen forms the interface for the specific task, access is also available through a web browser, and the entry is password protected.
The One More Function architecture is built on function instances. If one more breaker or one more protection stage is needed, another instance is added, for example differential elements (87) or an autosynchronizer (25A). One device can control up to 30 breakers. In the documentation example, one BE1-FLEX protects and controls four breakers and performs automatic synchronization of a backup generator during a closed-transition transfer (8 voltage channels, 15 current, 8 digital inputs, 15 outputs).
The BE1-FLEX monitors up to 28 current transformers, so low-impedance bus differential protection with a large number of feeders becomes practical, up to 9 three-phase groups or 28 single-phase circuits. For networks with distributed generation there are up to 30 sets of directional settings, with maximum sensitivity angle settings for positive, negative and zero sequence, blinders and load areas. The functions are used, for example, to protect distribution transformers against overexcitation (function 24 with permission from the power direction element 32) during power export by distributed generation.
In the version without protection the device works as a logic controller with IEEE C37.90 quality, with up to 27 inputs and 27 outputs, analog signals 4–20 mA, 0–10 V and RTDs. The system combines the functions of hundreds of devices in one, which reduces training and simplifies design. There are basic and extended function presentations, a home HMI screen with status and control, automatically configured event reports, security logs recording unauthorized access attempts, display of logic on the HMI with gesture scaling, and a Live Logic Metering function in BESTCOMSPlus for visualizing all inputs and outputs. The IEC 61850 protocol is available as an option and is configured with the BEST61850 program.
They are used to protect feeders, buses, transformers, generators, incomers and intersystem links, and in microgrids, data centers and facilities with distributed generation. The devices are designed and manufactured at plants in Highland, Illinois and Taylor, Texas.
