Description
Single-function microprocessor relays of the BE1 series are produced for protecting generators and synchronous machines. They are used on small generators, as backup protection and when upgrading panels that have electromechanical relays. Each relay performs one function, so setup is simple and protection is easy to add to an existing panel.
BE1-25 is a synchronism check relay. It monitors the voltages on both sides of the breaker and allows closing only within permissible phase angle and voltage limits. Built-in voltage check supervision covers cases where synchronism check alone is not enough, for example when energizing a dead bus. The BE1-32R and BE1-32O/U directional power relays detect reverse power, under-power and over-power in generators, motors and other critical equipment. They work from active power measurement. Single-phase and three-phase input versions are available, with instantaneous, definite time and inverse time delays and a stepless setpoint.
The BE1-40Q protects a synchronous generator against loss of excitation. It uses true reactive power measurement to detect conditions that could cause serious equipment damage. Loss of excitation is dangerous because the generator starts drawing reactive power from the network and can overheat.
BE1-64F detects ground faults in the field winding of a synchronous generator or motor. The models connect to the positive or negative pole of the exciter or main machine field circuit, provide a pre-trip alarm, need no setpoints, and mount in the cutouts of existing ground fault relays. A single ground fault in the field circuit does not stop the machine, but a second one damages the winding, so early warning is needed.
The relays have low burden on the CT and VT circuits, which reduces requirements for measuring transformers, a power supply with a small load on the battery, a simple setup interface without a computer, LED signalling, and in-case testing with test plugs. For generators with many functions, the BE1-11g or BE1-FLEX system is recommended, and for excitation systems, DECS regulators. The choice between a single-function relay and a multifunction system depends on generator power and the number of protections required.

Questions and answers
What are the BE1-32R and BE1-32O/U relays used for?
They detect reverse power, under-power and over-power in generators and motors, based on active power measurement. Time delays can be instantaneous, definite time or inverse time.
What fault does the BE1-40Q detect?
Loss of excitation in a synchronous generator, based on true reactive power measurement.
Are setpoints needed for the BE1-64F?
No, the relay needs no setpoints. It detects ground faults in the field circuit and gives a pre-trip alarm.
