VEMoDRIVE MV — medium-voltage drive systems up to 60 MW: VFDs, LCI starters, subsynchronous cascades, excitation
VEMoDRIVE MV is a range of complete variable-speed medium-voltage drives rated from 200 kW to 60 MW with an output frequency of 0–120 Hz. The system includes the motor, frequency converter, transformer and automation, and the manufacturer handles design, supply, installation, commissioning and service. The drives are installed at pump stations, thermal power plants, and metallurgical, chemical and mining enterprises, both new and for modernization.

Description
Under the VEMoDRIVE brand the manufacturer supplies variable-speed low- and medium-voltage electric drives in the range from 0.55 kW to 60 MW. The medium-voltage system is assembled with the company's own motors from its plants in Zwickau, Wernigerode and Dresden, plus converters and transformers. The whole system from the motor to the automation is supplied by one manufacturer, so it coordinates the interfaces between the units itself. The drive systems division grew out of a Berlin engineering company that joined the group in 2011.
The input voltage of the converters is 3.3–13.8 kV. For pumps, fans and compressors, multilevel converters with cascaded low-voltage cells are used. Rolling mills, conveyors and winches get high-dynamic converters on high-power high-voltage IGBT/IGCT in 3-, 5- and multilevel topology. Large synchronous motors are started by thyristor LCI starting converters. There is a 2-quadrant mode with a diode rectifier (DFE) and a 4-quadrant mode with an active rectifier (AFE), which returns energy to the grid. The cabinets have degree of protection IP21–IP42, and the harmonics meet the IEEE 519 limits.
According to the brochure for the chemical and oil and gas industries, LCI starters are made for output voltage up to 11 kV and power up to 25 MVA. MV frequency converters reach up to 20 MW with air cooling and up to 27 MW with water cooling. Air cooling is simpler to operate, while water cooling takes more power from a cabinet. Excitation systems for synchronous motors and generators include static excitation with current up to 850 A and auxiliary excitation of brushless machines; they regulate reactive power and power factor.
Wound-rotor motors of 500 kW – 12 MW are controlled by the VEMoDRIVE SCC subsynchronous cascade. An uncontrolled and a controlled converter are connected in series in the rotor circuit, and the slip energy is returned to the grid. The cascade suits centrifugal compressors, fans and pumps where high dynamics are not needed and a limited speed range is sufficient. Compared with throttling in water pumps or with additional resistors in the rotor, the cascade saves a noticeable amount of energy. Without the cascade, the speed of such motors is changed by additional resistors in the rotor, and the slip energy goes into heat. Existing drives with wound-rotor motors are retrofitted with the cascade and made variable-speed. Together with the drives, converter transformers, resistor starters, switchgear, MCC panels and automation systems are supplied.
