Description
Traction and auxiliary converters are among the main components of the traction system, converting electrical energy into the form needed to drive traction motors and auxiliary equipment. According to the manufacturer, they can account for up to 50% of the total energy consumption of a train, so the choice of solution directly affects the energy efficiency and emissions of the fleet. The company draws on 50 years of experience in developing and producing Mitrac traction systems for all types of rolling stock, both new and refurbished.
Mitrac Power traction converters are designed for the harshest climatic conditions, high availability and performance. They suit any rolling stock, including that built by other manufacturers, from locomotives and light rail to regional and high-speed trains, for different voltages, extreme temperatures and humidity, and for installation in confined space to increase capacity. Supply voltages, including multi-system ones, cover 15 kV AC, 25 kV AC, 3 kV DC, 1500 V DC and 600–750 V DC. Alternative sources are batteries and systems with hydrogen fuel cells.
Cooling is natural by train movement, forced air or water. Silicon carbide (SiC) reduces noise by 19 dBA and volume by 51%. The designs use the latest semiconductor solutions and ecodesign principles, including regenerative braking, natural cooling and high recyclability. Production is spread across 13 plants worldwide. The components meet the latest safety standards and are designed for high efficiency and repairability. For non-electrified lines the company has traction systems based on hydrogen fuel cells and energy storage.
Projects include a converter for four voltages (1500 V DC, 3 kV DC, 25 kV AC, 15 kV) with a built-in auxiliary converter for Avelia Horizon (TGV M), a dual-system 25 kV / 1500 V converter for IC-NG trains (Netherlands), a 1500 V DC converter for the Shenzhen metro (line 1) and a modular water-cooled 25 kV AC converter for a 6000 hp locomotive. The solutions also suit the refurbishment of old fleets.
