Description
The substation is intended for urban and suburban DC networks, that is, metros, trams and suburban railways. It supplies traction voltage to the network and at the same time returns the regenerative braking energy of the rolling stock, which meets the energy efficiency requirements of transport authorities. It can be integrated both when upgrading an existing system and when building a new line. It consists of a transformer, a reversible converter and an AC-side filter that maintains power quality in line with the requirements of the grid.
Priority is given to energy exchange between trains. If there are no other consumers on the line, all braking energy is returned to the supply network for sale or for the stations' own needs (escalators, lighting, ventilation). The substation captures more than 99% of the recovered braking energy, which reduces CO2 emissions. Dynamic voltage regulation adapts to the changing demand of the network, and supply power is increased as traffic grows without changes to the infrastructure.
Higher efficiency makes it possible to increase the distance between substations: on a new line 20% fewer are needed, which lowers capital costs. Less heat from the braking resistors on trains reduces the need for air conditioning and ventilation of tunnels and stations. During braking the train acts as a generator, and the reversible converter transfers this energy from the DC side to the AC network. The substation is produced in different configurations by voltage and power, and 136 converters have been ordered or delivered.
The substations operate in the metros of Riyadh, London, Dubai, Hamburg, Toulouse, Athens and Panama, on the monorail in Santiago de los Caballeros, on suburban trains in Naples and on tram networks in Sydney, Tel Aviv, Hanover and Braunschweig. In Hanover, a 750 V, 2 MW, 50 Hz unit has been installed under the GUW+ smart substation programme. The manufacturer's electrification offering covers voltages from 600 V DC to 2×25 kV AC, including APS catenary-free tram power supply and SRS ground-level charging for trams and electric buses. For the metros and tram networks of Ukraine the substation is considered as a replacement for the rectifier-inverter converters of traction substations.
