5000/5100 series high-voltage variable frequency drives (cascaded multilevel) 3–13.8 kV, 0.2–23 MW
The 5000 and 5100 series variable frequency drives control medium-voltage induction and synchronous motors of 3–13.8 kV with a rating from 200 kW to 23 MW. The topology is cascaded and multilevel, built on series-connected power cells. Applications cover pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors and mills where energy saving, soft starting and speed control are needed.

Description
The power section is built on a multilevel voltage source inverter topology. Each phase consists of series-connected power cells fed from separate secondary windings of a dry-type phase-shifting transformer. The phase shift between the windings forms a multi-pulse rectifier, so the input current has few harmonics. The output voltage is practically sinusoidal, and standard high-voltage motors are connected to the drive. The more cells in a phase, the more levels the output voltage has and the smaller the voltage steps that fall on the motor winding insulation.
The 5000 series in the integrated version grew out of the earlier compact design. The whole drive is assembled in a monoblock cabinet with higher power density, a smaller footprint and simpler layout in the room. According to the manufacturer's page, the RMVC/WD model of the 5000 series is rated for 6 or 10 kV and a power of up to 3500 kVA, with 1700 V IGBTs in the cells. The 10 kV cabinets are from 1800 to 3200 mm wide at a depth of 1500–1800 mm, with a mass from 2700 to 5300 kg.
The air-cooled 5100 series is built in separate cabinets, and the power cells are fitted with dry metallised-film capacitors. For high ratings there is a water-cooled 5100 with a water-to-water scheme. The cells there have a double parallel water circuit and quick-disconnect connections, so they are replaced without a long drive stoppage. According to the brochure of the manufacturer's European service centre, the RMVC5100 series delivers an output frequency of 0–50 Hz (maximum 120 Hz). The drives are offered with different cooling systems and also in containers with an autonomous closed cooling system for severe conditions.
The manufacturer's site gives operating conditions of relative humidity up to 90 % without condensation (at 25 °C) and installation altitude up to 1 km. The service centre carries out commissioning, updates software and hardware, and trains the customer's personnel.
The item is of interest for modernisation of auxiliary drives of power plants, water utility pumping stations, mine fans and compressor units. A frequency start removes inrush currents when starting large motors, and speed control instead of throttling with a valve gives the main saving on pumps and fans. Before modernisation the space for the cabinets and the transformer is checked, as well as heat removal from the room, because the choice between air and water cooling depends on it.

Questions and answers
What voltage and power are the 5000/5100 drives designed for?
According to the service centre brochure, the RMVC5100 series covers 200 kW to 23 MW at 3–13.8 kV. A 5000 series model is listed on the manufacturer's site for 6 or 10 kV and a power of up to 3500 kVA.
What cooling systems are available?
The 5100 series comes air-cooled in separate cabinets or water-cooled with a water-to-water scheme for high ratings. There is also a container version with an autonomous closed cooling system.
Can an ordinary high-voltage motor be connected to the drive?
Yes, the multilevel cascaded topology gives a practically sinusoidal output voltage, so standard induction and synchronous motors are suitable. The output frequency is 0–50 Hz, maximum 120 Hz.
