THYNE / HIPASE-E: thyristor excitation system for synchronous machines up to 8 000 A
THYNE / HIPASE-E are static and thyristor excitation systems for synchronous generators, motors and condensers for currents from 25 to 8 000 A DC. The HIPASE-E controller works as an AVR and sequencer for static and brushless exciters. The system is installed on hydro and turbine generators, pumped-storage motor-generators and in the reconstruction of old excitation.

Description
The excitation system sets the rotor current of a synchronous machine and through it controls voltage and reactive power, so the behavior of a generator, motor or synchronous condenser in the grid depends on it. The THYNE line has four types. THYNE1 on IGBTs works as a compact device up to 25 A DC for brushless exciters and DC exciters. THYNE 400 is built as a modular thyristor system up to 400 A DC for the same tasks. THYNE 500 and THYNE 600 are modular static excitation systems for 2 000 and 8 000 A DC respectively, and the larger model is designed for large hydro and turbine generators.
The controller is HIPASE-E, an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and sequencer for static and brushless excitation systems of all types of synchronous machines. The software structure conforms to the IEEE 421.5 models and contains all the required limiters and the power system stabilizer PSS2A/B or PSS4B. The built-in firing pulse controller suits single-phase and three-phase machines with a rated generator frequency of 16.7-400 Hz, and the operating range is 10-440 Hz. The controller supply is 24-250 V DC, the measuring inputs are 100-125 V AC for voltage and 1 or 5 A for current. The regulation range is 0.9-1.1 Un, the accuracy is not worse than ±0.2 %, and the test voltage is 2 kV per EN 50178. The configuration is single-channel or fully redundant.
The preferred power module is called Smart Bridge. It is a 6-pulse fully controlled thyristor bridge designed specifically for excitation, with easy maintenance, fan redundancy and high availability. All HIPASE devices are built on one hardware platform with common firmware and are programmed with one tool, HIPASE Engineering Tool, with logic set by function block diagrams per IEC 61131. The housing takes half or full 19″ width, and a 7″ color touch panel can be built-in or separate. Communication with the upper level uses the protocols IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE), IEC 60870-5-103/-104, Modbus TCP, OPC UA and FTP. The device is protected against network attacks by separate application and communication processors, a built-in firewall, encryption and regular updates.
The manufacturer promises support and spare parts for 20 years or more. In a modernization it is possible to replace only the obsolete AVR and keep the existing power section. For connection to the grid, models, parameterization and verification studies are carried out.
