VEMA — static and brushless excitation systems for generators and synchronous motors
VEMA are excitation systems for synchronous generators and industrial synchronous motors. They supply the field winding and keep the machine in synchronism. The static version covers excitation currents from 50 A DC, and the brushless version covers currents up to 50 A. They are used on hydro generators, on generators of CHP and biopower plants, and in synchronous motors in heavy industry.

Description
VEMA are excitation systems for synchronous generators and industrial synchronous motors. They deliver a stable supply to the field winding and keep the machine running steadily in synchronism. The systems are built on conventional S7 programmable logic controllers and are configured by the manufacturer's specialists for a specific machine. The range covers two types of excitation, static and brushless. Both types work with generators of hydropower and CHP plants and with motors of industrial enterprises.
Static excitation is based on a thyristor rectifier that feeds the rotor winding through slip rings. It is engineered individually for each project, for excitation currents from 50 A DC. Brushless excitation is based on control of an exciter with a rotating rectifier and is rated for currents up to 50 A DC. Both schemes are intended for the most critical industrial motors and generators. When an outdated static or brushless system is replaced, the customer can usually choose between VEMA and a compact device that combines excitation, protection and control in one unit (for example, G800).
The references mention the G800 generator excitation system installed together with S7-1500 unit automation and Siprotec 5 generator protection at the Vajukoski hydropower plant of Kemijoki. The manufacturer's experience in this field covers more than 400 excitation and protection projects and more than 4000 MW of excited capacity. The systems are part of complete deliveries for hydropower plants. The manufacturer also supplies digital turbine governors, unit and plant automation, generator protection, AC and DC auxiliary power systems and switchgear of all voltage classes. An example project is the modernization of the Djupdal (15 MW) and Skollenborg (2 × 48.5 MW) hydropower plants in Norway, with replacement of the control and excitation systems.
Assembly and factory acceptance tests are carried out at the plant in Vaasa (Finland), in a dedicated FAT hall. Testing takes place with the customer present on site or remotely, so the system is verified before shipment. The systems are used on hydro generators, on generators of CHP and biopower plants, and in synchronous motors in the pulp and paper, metallurgical and chemical industries.
