Description
The converters are built on GCT (Gate Commutated Turn-off Thyristor) devices of the 6000 V / 6000 A class. TMdrive-XL80 is designed for an output voltage of the 3.8 kV class. One section delivers 15 MVA (15 MW with a 3.8 kV synchronous motor), and two sections working on one motor through a parallel-operation reactor deliver 30 MVA. The input rectifier is 24-pulse with a multi-winding transformer located outside the electrical room.
For a single-section drive a compact control panel 800 mm wide is available, and the single-section 15 MVA drive measures about 5100 × 2105 × 2614 mm and weighs about 15 t (without water). TMdrive-XL85 is designed for an output voltage of up to 7.2 kV with direct motor connection and a power from 30 to 120 MVA, one section up to 30 MVA. The rectifier is 36-pulse with an outdoor phase-shifting transformer, and the output is five-level. This voltage waveform is gentle on the motor, so standard motors operate without an output transformer.
Efficiency is about 98.6 %. The diode rectifier keeps the power factor above 0.95 over the control range without compensation capacitors, and harmonics are below the IEEE 519 requirements without line filters. The power section is cooled with deionized water, the piping materials are compatible with it, and the expected mean time between failures is over 20 years. The optional synchronous transfer of the motor to the grid eliminates current and torque surges and makes it possible to start several motors with one drive.
Lower losses in the room and a smaller footprint simplify design, installation and logistics. The drive is used on compressors at LNG plants and trunk gas pipelines, on blowers, high-power pumps, test stands, and in the electrification of turbine drives. The drive was tested under full load on the manufacturer's own test stand, which is rated for all drives of the XL series. Dielectric strength complies with IEC 60146-1, the test voltage is 18.5 kV for 1 minute, and the average noise level is below 80 dBA at a distance of one metre from the cabinet. In the oil and gas industry the XL80 and XL85 are combined with the manufacturer's two-pole synchronous motor, which gives higher availability and lower emissions.

Questions and answers
What voltage and power do the XL80 and XL85 have?
The XL80 is designed for an output voltage of the 3.8 kV class, one section 15 MVA, two sections up to 30 MVA. The XL85 is designed for voltage up to 7.2 kV and power from 30 to 120 MVA, one section up to 30 MVA.
Are line filters and an output transformer needed?
Line filters are not needed, because harmonics are below the IEEE 519 requirements and the power factor is above 0.95 without compensation capacitors. The XL85 has a five-level output and works with standard motors without an output transformer.
What cools the power section and what is the efficiency?
The power section is cooled with deionized water. Efficiency is about 98.6 %, and the expected mean time between failures is over 20 years.
