Description
The TMdrive-XL75 drive is fed from the AC grid and is intended for high-power electric drives in various industries. One section (bank) is rated 15, 20 or 23 MVA, and parallel operation of several sections gives power up to 92 MVA. The output voltage is 6.0/6.6 kV, and the motor is connected directly, without an output transformer.
The power section is built on IEGT switches (Injection Enhanced Gate Transistor) with an operating voltage of 4500 V and currents of 1500/2100 A. This is a conservative choice that improves reliability. The power bridges are cooled with deionized water and the piping materials are compatible with it, so the expected time between failures exceeds 20 years. The input rectifier is a diode 36-pulse unit with a phase-shifting transformer installed outside the electrical room. The power factor exceeds 0.95 without compensation capacitors, and harmonics are below the IEEE 519 requirements without grid filters. The five-level output voltage forms a smooth waveform that is gentle on the motor. Efficiency is about 98.6 %.
The inverter consists of six draw-out IEGT half-modules, each with four IEGTs and two neutral-point diodes, water-cooled and fitted with quick-disconnect couplings. The input transformer is oil-filled, with several LV secondary windings. PWM switches between modes: asynchronous up to 25 % speed, synchronous in the 25–50 % range, and fixed pulse width at 50–100 %, with a switching frequency of up to 600 Hz. After a loss of supply of less than 2 s the drive restarts. A single-section 23 MVA drive at 6.6 kV measures about 10,200 × 1300 × 2550 mm, and a two-section unit gives 46 MW.
Lower losses in the electrical room, a smaller footprint and simpler design and installation come from the absence of an output transformer and from water cooling, which reduces the load on fans and air conditioners. The cabinets have an IP42 enclosure rating, except for the fan openings. The drive was tested at full load with a 25 MW synchronous motor at 3600 rpm. It is used in the highest-power electric drives, including compressors at LNG plants and gas pumping stations, blast furnace blowers, high-power pumps and fans, and test stands. The electric drive makes it possible to replace turbine drives with electric ones.
