Description
The drive is built on a cascaded cell topology with low-voltage IGBTs and a built-in input isolation transformer. It is designed for high efficiency, low harmonic distortion and a high power factor. Power is up to 19,500 kVA, up to 19,000 kVA at 11 kV according to the datasheet, efficiency about 97 %.
The design is conservative, with 1700 V IGBTs and film (not electrolytic) capacitors with a service life of over 20 years, so periodic replacement and reforming of capacitors is not required. The expected mean time between failures is over 15 years. The input multi-winding phase-shifting transformer and the diode rectifier form a multi-pulse circuit, namely 18 pulses for the 3.3 kV class, 24 for 4.16 kV, 30/36 for 6.6 kV, 48 for 10 kV and 54 for 11 kV.
Harmonics in the grid are below the IEEE 519 requirements without filters, and the power factor exceeds 0.95 over the whole control range without capacitor banks. The transformer provides galvanic isolation, a high insulation level (BIL) and eliminates common-mode voltage on the motor. The multilevel output voltage (9 levels for 4.16 kV, 11 levels for 6.6 kV) is close to a sine wave and requires no derating of the motor for insulation or heating, so standard motors are suitable. An overload of 125 % is permissible for 60 seconds.
The drive operates from a 50 or 60 Hz grid with a tolerance of ±5 %, with 60 Hz only for 4.16 kV, and the true power factor exceeds 0.95 lagging over the 40–100 % speed range. The dry-type transformer has an aluminium or copper winding with a temperature rise of 140 °C. The cabinet degree of protection is IP30 per IEC 60529, except for the fan openings, and the installation altitude is up to 1000 m above sea level. Noise is about 79 dB(A) at 50 Hz and 83 dB(A) at 60 Hz at a distance of 1 m. Torque accuracy is ±3 % with a temperature sensor and ±10 % without it, and the torque current response is 500 rad/s. The drive can be used with existing motors and cables during modernization.
The optional synchronous bumpless transfer of the motor to the grid (make-before-break) eliminates current and torque surges and makes it possible to start several motors in turn with one drive. Applications include centrifugal pumps, fans and compressors, screw compressors, blowers, refiners, mixers, extruders, conveyors, presses, slurry pipelines and mills, as well as power plant auxiliaries.

Questions and answers
Which voltage and power classes does the TMdrive-MVG2 have?
Output voltage 3.0/3.3, 4.0/4.16, 6.0/6.6, 10 and 11 kV, power up to 19,500 kVA. According to the datasheet, up to 19,000 kVA is available at 11 kV.
Are line filters and capacitor banks needed?
No, the multi-pulse rectifier gives harmonics below the IEEE 519 requirements without filters. The power factor exceeds 0.95 over the whole control range without capacitor banks.
Are standard motors suitable and what about the capacitors?
The multilevel output voltage is close to a sine wave, so standard motors work without derating and without an output transformer. Film capacitors have a service life of over 20 years and need no replacement.
