Description

The TMdrive-MVe2 drive is air-cooled and has an active front end (AFE). It is built for motor voltages of 3.3, 4.16 and 6.6 kV and up to 13.8 kV, with power up to 7350 kVA (8000 HP); higher ratings are available on request. According to the typical chart, the 3000 series (3.3 kV) covers 160–1250 kW, the 4000 series (4.2 kV) 400–2268 kW, the 6000 series (6.6 kV) 315–3600 kW, and the 11000 series (11 kV) 500–6000 kW.

The active front end maintains a power factor of 1.0 across the whole speed range, and grid harmonics are well below the limits of IEEE 519-2014. Regenerative braking that returns energy to the grid is part of the standard design. Therefore loads with active torque can be braked, and fans and pumps can be stopped quickly. The drive can also compensate reactive power of the plant grid.

The multilevel output voltage makes it possible to connect existing motors without an expensive output filter or special cables, and without derating for insulation and heating. An input isolation transformer is built into the package and protects the motor from high-frequency overvoltages. Synchronous bumpless transfer of the motor to the grid lets one drive control several motors and dynamically compensate the reactive power of the transferred motor. The current distortion seen by the grid is below 2 %, so no grid-side filter is needed. The output voltage waveform is multilevel, with distortion also below 2 %: 9 levels from zero to peak for 3–4.16 kV, 13 for 6–6.6 kV and 21 for 10–11 kV. During a short loss of supply the control system stays active for up to 2 seconds, and after a longer interruption the drive can regain control of a motor that is still rotating.

The circuit design is conservative. Dry film capacitors have a service life of 15 years and need no periodic replacement, and the expected time between failures is 16 years. The power module is built as a single draw-out unit, mean time to repair is about 30 minutes, and a minimum of spare parts and training is required.

For outdoor installation the TMdrive-Guardian version is available, an all-weather NEMA 3R enclosure. It operates without a separate building or air conditioning in the range from −40 to +50 °C. The drive is used for pumps, fans and compressors, blowers, refiners, extruders, conveyors, presses, mills, slurry pipelines and expanders in power generation, mining, oil and gas, water utilities and the cement industry.
