Description
The TMdrive-50 drive is designed for high-power processes with precise control. Voltage is 3.3 kV and power reaches 6000 kVA. It uses high-current IGBTs and control boards common to the whole TMdrive family. The manufacturer aimed the design at stable operation, simple setup and maintenance, and a low cost of ownership.
The power section is built on a three-level topology. Rectifier, inverter and cooling units are arranged flexibly, so power density is high, the footprint is minimal and installation is cheaper. The IGBT advantages cited by the manufacturer are as follows. The switches are driven by voltage rather than current, so the control circuits are low-power, compact, with few components and a low failure rate. Switching time is under 2 µs, so switching losses are very small and control is precise. A simple gate circuit made it possible to dispense with traditional snubber circuits.
Control is based on PWM with a fixed pulse pattern. Gate turn-on sequences are calculated in advance rather than during operation, which almost eliminates switching losses in the IGBTs and reduces harmonics. Like other TMdrive system drives, the TMdrive-50 connects to upper-level controllers and third-party systems over Ethernet, Profibus-DP, TC-net and other networks. It is set up and diagnosed with the TMdrive-Navigator tool, and in one system it can work alongside legacy drives. The voltage at the motor terminals must not exceed 3400 V AC in any mode, so voltage margin is allowed for when selecting the motor.
The drive is installed indoors, free of corrosive gases and dust, at altitudes up to 1000 m. Temperature is 0–40 °C at rated load and up to 50 °C with derating, humidity 5–95 % non-condensing. The cabinet enclosure rating is IP20 (NEMA 1). Maintenance requires 2000 mm in front of and 1500 mm behind the cabinet, and 1000 mm is left above the cabinet for the fans. The cabinet is 2000 or 3200 mm wide and 1650 mm deep. The drive is used in multi-motor systems with a common DC bus in the metals industry, including rolling and processing lines, and also on paper machines, test stands and mining equipment, as well as in compressor, fan and pump drives.
