Redundant static excitation systems for machines of 2–1300 MW
Static excitation systems for synchronous machines rated from 2 to 1300 MW with redundancy in both control and power sections. They feed the rotor winding through a thyristor rectifier from a supply transformer. Telemetric diagnostics and the MCO program are part of the support.

Description
The manufacturer supplies complex and powerful static excitation systems for synchronous machines rated from 2 to 1300 MW, namely hydro and turbine generators, synchronous condensers and large synchronous motors. The systems are made with redundancy in both control and power sections, and have telemetric diagnostics and a maintenance in operational condition program (MCO). For synchronous and induction motors and synchronous generators, design, manufacture, commissioning and training are offered.
A static excitation system feeds the rotor winding through a thyristor rectifier from a supply transformer connected to the generator terminals. The cabinet includes a power thyristor bridge with a firing board, a field flashing unit, contactors, overvoltage protection and a discharge resistor, an interface board, and a digital regulator SARN-V2, SARN-LT or HYDRALTA NG. A degraded analog mode, rotor and stator insulation monitoring, rotor current and stator parameter measurement, and an interface with the plant DCS are provided.
The choice of regulator depends on the machine. GLOBALTA is standardized for simple and compact applications, while SARN and HYDRALTA are adapted to hydro generators and complex industrial machines. If desired, unit control and generator and transformer protection can be combined with the regulator in one cabinet.
The Carquefou site is responsible for design, manufacture, factory tests, commissioning, customer training and support. One characteristic delivery is a mobile backup excitation system for EDF Hydro, housed in three containers and adapted to many EDF hydro plant units over a wide range of field current. All its elements, including field flashing, overvoltage protection, firing synchronization and the discharge resistor, are adjustable. Telemetric diagnostics make it possible to monitor the state of the system remotely, and the MCO program keeps it in operational condition throughout its service life. Excitation cabinets can be made for new plants and for upgrades of existing units. The system is built in stainless steel cabinets and consists of five subsystems: supply, excitation, rectifier, the SARN-V2 regulator set up from the HMI, and a junction box to the plant control system.
