Silcovert TH — multilevel medium-voltage drive 2.4–13.8 kV, 0.4–104 MVA
Silcovert TH is a series of multilevel medium-voltage frequency converters on IGBTs with cascaded H-bridges. The output voltage ranges from 2.4 to 13.8 kV and the power from 400 kVA to 104 MVA with four converters in parallel. The drive controls the speed of induction and synchronous motors, including those already installed.

Description
Silcovert TH belongs to PWM voltage source inverters for critical drives, where reliability and performance decide. The drive is built on IGBTs in a cascaded H-bridge topology. It controls the speed of any induction and synchronous motors, including existing ones, regardless of make and age, so it is chosen for modernization and for improving energy efficiency. Typical applications are pumps, fans, compressors, extruders, boiler feed pumps, replacement of turbine drives and high-speed drives.
The range starts at 400 kVA and reaches 104 MVA when four converters operate in parallel, while the output voltage lies between 2.4 and 13.8 kV. Series 7000 (2.4–7.2 kV) is built up to 8900 kVA with air cooling and up to 21,200 kVA with water cooling. Series 14000 (6.6–13.8 kV) gives up to 7600 kVA with air cooling (up to 15 MVA in parallel) and up to 30,000 kVA with water cooling (up to 104 MVA in parallel). The output frequency reaches 250 Hz, and up to 330 Hz with derating; versions for high-speed drives are available.
On the grid side a multi-pulse diode rectifier of 18–36 pulses is used, with a power factor above 0.95 and grid harmonics of no more than 3 % according to IEC and NEMA/IEEE 519. The alternative is an AFE active rectifier with cos φ = 1. The high PWM frequency produces an almost sinusoidal motor current with harmonics below 3 % and very small torque ripple, and the motor cable can be up to 600 m long without a filter. Efficiency is 96.5 % including the input transformer, and above 98 % according to the datasheet. The power section uses film capacitors instead of electrolytic ones, and the cooling is redundant in an N+1 scheme. Control is vector and field-oriented, with flying start of a rotating motor and voltage sag ride-through.
The MTBF according to the specification is 200,000 hours; the brochure gives a standard value of up to 70 thousand hours and 1.2 million hours in a hot-standby configuration. The design is cabinet or container, for example a 14.5 MVA station occupying 144 m². Water cooling reduces ventilation and air-conditioning costs and protects against contamination in the metallurgical and cement industries. The degree of protection is IP42, with UL, ABS and DNV certificates. For eLNG, fault-tolerant systems are offered with redundancy of power cells, converters and control, and a hot standby with changeover in less than 250 ms.
