Description
Silcovert S is built on a thyristor load-commutated current source inverter (LCI) and is intended for high-power synchronous motors and generators. The drive regulates speed and driving and braking torque, and has programmable V/Hz characteristics. The design is robust and compact, with efficiency above 98 % without an input transformer. The series is used both as an adjustable-speed drive and as a soft starting device. According to the website, hundreds of installations are in operation with more than 40 years of experience, while the brochure states more than 30 years.
The rating is up to 20 000 kVA with air cooling and up to 75 000 kVA with water cooling. The website gives a range of up to 80 MW, and the brochure gives an output power of 65 MW. The output voltage reaches 6.6 kV with air cooling and 10–15 kV with water cooling, and the website states up to 11 kV. The output frequency is 5–95 Hz. Line-side schemes are 6P/6P, 12P/6P, 12P/12P and 24P/6P, and 24- and 12-pulse configurations are chosen for low network distortion. The cable length to the motor is up to 500 m.
Cooling is air or water. In the water-cooled version the external heat exchanger is water-to-air and the internal one is water-to-water. The degree of protection is IP31–IP42, and the standard containerised design is suitable for indoor and outdoor installation. The drive requires little maintenance, has a convenient control interface and a full set of diagnostic tools. Options are N+1 thyristor redundancy, redundant control and a cooling unit. On high-power, high-speed pumps and compressors the drive makes a gearbox unnecessary.
As a static starter, Silcovert S accelerates synchronous compensators, large gas turbine generators (the generator works as the turbine starting motor) and motor-generators. At gas compressor stations with large synchronous machines, starting takes place without disturbances in the network and reduces the load on the line. A function for synchronising the machine with the network is available for parallel operation without phase error. In soft starter mode, a separate interface board controls the machine field through the existing excitation converter.
The drive is used for compressors, pumps and fans, extruders and mixers, and ship propulsion systems.
