Description
Silcovert N is a series of high-performance medium-voltage frequency converters with NPC (neutral point clamped) topology for induction and synchronous motors. The drives, based on proven IGBT/IGCT devices, are engineered to order. They have high static and dynamic performance and high efficiency across the whole operating range. With the active front end (AFE) option the drive is fully regenerative. Bidirectional power flow at a power factor close to unity, from zero to full speed, eliminates costly reactive power compensation systems. This is especially useful when the drive is used for continuous generation.
Silcovert TN is made up to 10 400 kVA with air cooling and up to 21 600 kVA with water cooling, with an output frequency of 5–70 Hz (extended range 5–140 Hz). Silcovert GN is water-cooled, with a rating of 9000–24 000 kVA (more on request) and a frequency of 10–65 Hz (extended range 10–100 Hz). The output voltage is up to 3.3 kV, and system ratings reach 60 MW.
The line-side circuit is from 12 to 24 pulses with a diode rectifier (cos φ > 0.95) or an AFE (cos φ = 1). Network harmonics comply with IEEE 519 and IEC, and motor current harmonics are below 5 %. Efficiency is 96.5 % with the transformer and 98 % for the drive. Control is V/Hz, vector and field-oriented, and operation is four-quadrant. The drive is immune to network transients, catches a rotating motor after a supply dip or loss, gives a high starting torque and a wide constant-torque range. The cable to the motor can be up to 400 m without a filter, and longer with a filter.
An arc-resistant design, degree of protection IP42 and N+1 cooling redundancy are provided. The marine version has ABS and DNV certificates, and containerised solutions are available. Applications include drives of rolling mill stands and coilers, finishing blocks of wire rod mills, reversing cold rolling mills, tube mills and conveyors. For ships these are propulsion systems, thrusters, pumps, compressors, winches and shore power (cold ironing). In the manufacturer's market list the drive is also named for energy storage, microgrids, hydrogen, hydro and wind power, oil and gas, power plants, cranes, test stands, metallurgy and mining. The quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015.

Questions and answers
What ratings do Silcovert TN and GN have?
Silcovert TN is made up to 10 400 kVA with air cooling and up to 21 600 kVA with water cooling. Silcovert GN is water-cooled and rated 9000–24 000 kVA, and system power reaches 60 MW.
Does the drive support energy regeneration?
With the active front end AFE option the drive is fully regenerative, cos φ = 1. With a 12–24 pulse diode rectifier cos φ is above 0.95.
What are the output frequency and the cable length to the motor?
For TN the output frequency is 5–70 Hz, extended to 140 Hz, and for GN 10–65 Hz, extended to 100 Hz. The cable to the motor can be up to 400 m without a filter.
