SBO221–SBO276 — excitation support systems for short-circuit forcing and motor starting
The excitation support system replenishes the regulator supply with load current when the generator terminal voltage drops. The regulator then provides full forcing during overloads and short circuits. Used on diesel and gas engine power stations, marine and industrial installations with heavy motor loads.

Description
SBO221–SBO226, SBO232–SBO237, SBO241–SBO246 and SBO271–SBO276 excitation support systems improve the performance of the generator excitation system. They allow compatible voltage regulators to deliver full forcing during overloads and generator short circuits.
On a generator with shunt self-excitation, the regulator is powered from the terminal voltage. During a close short circuit or the starting of a large motor this voltage drops sharply, and the regulator loses its ability to force excitation. This is exactly when excitation is needed most, because the output current of the machine depends on it. The SBO system replenishes the supply from load current, so forcing is maintained.
Each system consists of a reservoir assembly and power current transformers. The transformers are ordered separately and installed at the generator terminals. The manufacturer produces several sizes of power current transformers for the SBO180, SBO202, SBO220, SBO230, SBO240 and SBO270 series, so the set is matched to the specific generator and regulator.
Excitation support is especially needed in heavy operating conditions, in particular when large motors are started from a standalone generator. It helps hold up the voltage, improves the stability of power generation and provides enough current for selective operation of protections. The CBS-212A current forcing system solves a similar task. The system does not replace the regulator. It works together with a compatible voltage regulator and only supports its supply. The power current transformers sit at the generator terminals, so they draw energy from the current flowing in the machine circuit during a fault or a start. The exact composition of the set and the transformer size are specified from the generator and regulator data. Without such support the regulator could not bring excitation to full forcing in these modes, and protections would receive too little current to operate with confidence. This is needed where the generator operates with deep voltage drops at its terminals and frequent starts of large motors. The systems are installed on diesel and gas engine power stations, marine and industrial installations with heavy motor loads. The manufacturer designs and builds them at its plant in Highland, Illinois, USA.

Questions and answers
What does an SBO system consist of?
A reservoir assembly and power current transformers. The transformers are ordered and installed at the generator terminals separately. Sizes are available for the SBO180, SBO202, SBO220, SBO230, SBO240 and SBO270 series.
Why is excitation support needed when starting a motor?
On a generator with shunt self-excitation the terminal voltage drops sharply when a large motor starts, and the regulator loses its ability to force excitation. The SBO system replenishes the supply with load current.
Which series are included in this entry?
SBO221–SBO226, SBO232–SBO237, SBO241–SBO246 and SBO271–SBO276. The CBS-212A current forcing system solves a similar task.
