Description
SARN-V2 (Système Automatique de Régulation Numérique; SARN-3C.2 in the brochure) is a digital automatic excitation regulator for synchronous machines. It is manufactured at the site in Carquefou. Development has been under way since 1997, and the V2 version has been produced since 2009. The regulator is approved by EDF and Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR), and in 2024 the 200th set was ordered. Carquefou produces 10–15 systems a year, and the main customers are hydroelectric power stations and petrochemical plants.
Under the EDF framework contract MSH Renouveau (2014–2028) the site is qualified as a supplier of type 2 and 3 regulators, and at the start of 2024 it had equipped 71 units. The regulator is used with static excitation, with an exciter or with an asynchronous exciter (AE). For static excitation a typical cabinet is rated for current up to 400 A, and the remaining parameters are set for the specific unit. The logic is implemented on an M340 industrial controller, and the system is open to expansion.
The package includes a digital regulation module with two cascaded loops, a 7-inch touch panel (local and/or remote), a sequence and fault handling module with an archive, and a communication and measurement module. Regulation is performed by excitation current, stator voltage, reactive power and tan φ. External interfaces include 32–64 digital inputs/outputs (expandable), Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet, 12 analogue inputs and 10 outputs, and optionally 8 Pt100 inputs. A web server is provided. Loops and limits are set from the HMI without special software, so commissioning and parameter changes do not require separate software.
Optionally, unit control and generator and transformer protections are integrated into the cabinet. An example is the upgrade of the Song Loulou hydro plant (Cameroon): eight SARN-3C.2 regulators for 57 MVA 10.3 kV units, control and protection cabinets, spillway equipment and station SCADA.
For EDF Hydro, a mobile backup excitation system in three containers, with a power take-off, a rectifier and a regulator, has been built on the basis of SARN-V2. The mobile container version makes it possible to move the system between sites.
