RTX POWER — excitation system and digital voltage regulator for generators, synchronous motors and condensers, field current 10–7000 A
RTX POWER is an excitation system and digital automatic voltage regulator for synchronous generators, motors and condensers. The modular platform covers machines with a rated field current from 10 to 7000 A, in a static thyristor version and for rotating, including brushless, exciters. The system is installed at hydro and thermal power plants, substations, in industry and in the oil and gas sector.

Description
The system supplies DC voltage to the rotor field winding and thus sets the field current and the terminal voltage of the synchronous machine. According to the manufacturer's description, the package includes a voltage regulator, a thyristor rectifier, an excitation transformer, a field breaker, an initial excitation circuit and rotor overvoltage protection (crowbar). The electronics are placed in a separate cabinet compartment, away from the power section, which heats up. Each system is designed with a 20–30 % current margin relative to the rated requirements to extend its service life.
There are two topologies. With static excitation a powerful converter feeds the rotor winding directly, and the response is practically instantaneous. For machines with a rotating exciter, a low-power converter feeds an AC exciter. In the brushless scheme the system monitors the rotating diodes: an open diode gives a signal, and a breakdown leads to a trip. Thyristor bridges can work with current sharing between two or more bridges or in hot standby with two bridges.
Control is built on the programmable controller CPX06 with an x86 processor and TTM01 modules, which fire the thyristor bridge and monitor the temperature and current of each thyristor and the state of fuses and fans. They exchange data over a CANopen network. For small machines there is a 20 A power driver-chopper DRV01. The functions comply with IEEE 421.5; they include voltage regulation (AVR) and field current regulation (FCR), reactive power and power factor control, limiters OEL, UEL, SCL, MEL and V/Hz, the stabilizer PSS2C/PSS4B, a built-in synchronizer, rotor temperature calculation according to IEEE 115-2009 and rotor earth fault protection ANSI 64R. The input-output module has 48 DI, 30 DO, 16 AI, 16 AO, 3 VT inputs and 3 CT inputs with 2000 V isolation.
Control channels, input-output modules, thyristor bridges, power supplies and fans can be made redundant, so components are repaired and replaced without stopping the unit. Communication with the process control system uses IEC 61850 GOOSE/MMS, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-101/104 and Modbus TCP/RTU, time is synchronized by IRIG-B, NTP or PTP, and the event recorder has a resolution of under 1 ms. Kestrel Power Engineering tested RTX POWER for compliance with NERC and IEEE requirements for operation in North America. For upgrading existing systems there is a Front-End variant, in which the controllers, input-output modules and thyristor control are replaced, while the thyristor bridges, field breaker, excitation transformer and cable connections are kept.
