PCS-9590 / PCS-9591 DC ice-melting installations for overhead lines (stationary and mobile)

The PCS-9590 (stationary, 12-pulse) and PCS-9591 (mobile, 6-pulse) melt ice on overhead line conductors with direct current. Heavy ice deposits can damage conductors and towers and disconnect part of the network or all of it. Melting with DC short-circuit current keeps the network in operation in severe weather.

Description

The principle is simple. The AC line is short-circuited at its end, and the rectifier passes a DC short-circuit current through the conductors, which heats the conductor and sheds the ice. The output voltage is adjustable, and the melting current is chosen according to the cross-section and length of the conductor. Thyristor rectifiers reduce the impact on the power system during melting and simplify switching. The installation operates stably for a long time with a high current and a large firing angle, so it is suitable for lines with conductors of different cross-section and length.

The equipment is installed in containers or in a valve hall. The container version takes up less area, shortens construction on site and is easier to transport. The design is compact, with water or air cooling and compact valve groups. Six phase-selecting disconnectors automatically switch the melting schemes, and the ice is melted in turn and evenly on all phases of the line. The disconnectors select the target AC line and the phases through which the current flows. A control and protection system that supervises and protects the entire device is supplied with the installation. The primary scheme requires a minimum of switching so that in the off-season the installation can work as a static var compensator SVC, quickly compensate reactive power, hold voltage and improve power quality.

The stationary PCS-9590 is intended for long high-voltage lines. It is usually supplied from the lower-voltage busbars of the substation, in a typical scheme 35 kV. The equipment is placed in two standard containers. One holds the valve groups and the water cooling system, the other the phase-selecting disconnectors and control panels. The converter transformer provides the required voltage and commutation reactance. Rectification is done by 12-pulse valve groups, and the cooling system has an internal forced water circuit and an external forced air circuit.

The mobile PCS-9591 works on shorter lines of a lower voltage class. In a typical scheme it is supplied from 10 kV at a 110/220 kV substation. All the equipment is housed in one standard container, namely the 6-pulse rectifier, the cooling system, the phase-selecting disconnectors and the control and protection system. The cooling here also combines an internal forced water circuit and an external air circuit. The container is transported to the substation where ice is expected and connected to the line that needs to be cleared.

Questions and answers

How do the PCS-9590 and PCS-9591 differ?

The PCS-9590 is stationary, with 12-pulse valve groups in two containers, for long high-voltage lines. The PCS-9591 is mobile, with a 6-pulse rectifier in one container, for shorter lower-voltage lines.

From what voltage are the installations supplied?

In typical schemes the PCS-9590 is supplied from 35 kV busbars, and the PCS-9591 from 10 kV at a 110/220 kV substation.

Can the installation be used outside the icing season?

Yes, with a minimum of switching it works as a static var compensator SVC. Six phase-selecting disconnectors switch the schemes automatically.
