PCS-9569H — high-voltage shore power system for ships, 2–20 MVA
NR PCS-9569H is a high-voltage shore power system for ships rated from 2 to 20 MVA with an output frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. At the quay the ship shuts down its auxiliary diesel generators and is supplied from the shore grid. The system is installed in sea and river ports, at cruise and cargo ship terminals and in ship repair docks.

Description
Auxiliary engines burn a lot of fuel while the ship is at berth, and in port they cause emissions, noise and vibration. Shore power reduces energy losses and the shipowner's costs and improves the environment of the water area. Ships need a supply at 50 Hz or 60 Hz, while the port grid often has a different frequency, so frequency conversion cannot be avoided. The PCS-9569H is designed for large ships with a high-voltage onboard network that need megawatts at berth.
The PCS-9569H source has a modular design with modules connected in series. This gives a high output voltage and allows the power to be matched to the class of ships served by the berth, from ferries and container ships to cruise liners. For small berths a low-voltage version is available, the PCS-9569L, rated up to 1 MVA.
The PCS-9569 system consists of three subsystems. The core is the variable-frequency power source. Controlled AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC converters, together with transformers and switchgear cabinets, form a 50 or 60 Hz supply for the ship regardless of the frequency of the port grid.
The second subsystem is a SCADA based on the proven PCS-9700 substation system. It works on supervisory control principles and monitors the converter, the transformer, the switchgear cabinets and environmental parameters. The operator gets a clear interface with advanced analysis and alarm tools, and all measurements and events are collected in one place. Control of the converter, transformer and switchgear cabinets is combined into one system with a single interface.
The third subsystem, the shore-to-ship connection, is located along the quay. Connection sockets are installed at the quay terminals, and the cable runs from them on board. A protective interlock switches off the shore supply when the cable is disconnected, on an emergency stop command or when the plug is pulled out, so the cable is never left energized. A cable reel is supplied to order. It selects and pays out the cable by itself depending on the tide level and the ship's draught, without exceeding the permitted force on the cable. The system is designed for ports where ships stay at the quay for hours, namely passenger and cargo terminals and repair docks.

Questions and answers
What power range does the PCS-9569H cover?
From 2 to 20 MVA, with the power reached by connecting modules in series. A low-voltage version, the PCS-9569L, up to 1 MVA is available for small berths.
Can 60 Hz ships be supplied from a 50 Hz port grid?
Yes, the variable-frequency source delivers 50 or 60 Hz regardless of the port grid frequency.
How is the cable connection to the ship protected?
The interlock switches off the shore supply when the cable is disconnected, on an emergency stop or when the plug is pulled out. The optional cable reel selects the cable by itself according to the tide and the ship's draught.
