MTX / MTX2 medium voltage variable frequency drives 4.16 kV for outdoor installation
MTX and MTX2 are medium voltage variable frequency drives for 4 160 V that are installed outdoors without a building or E-house. According to the manufacturer, the MTX became the first MV drive in the world designed specifically for outdoor installation. The new MTX2 generation, rated up to 6 000 hp, works at temperatures from −45 to +50 °C.

Description
The drive is installed at remote sites with no building, from jungles to deserts, and it takes up no space inside buildings. It is convenient to place next to a pipeline pumping station or a conveyor in a quarry, where a building would have to be erected separately. The MTX2 has a fully enclosed heating and cooling system, so an air-conditioned modular building (E-house) is not needed, and the area and construction costs are reduced. The MTX2 enclosure meets UL Type 3R, 4 or 4X.
The MTX2 is made in two frame sizes for 4 160 V. The MTX2-15 covers 500–1 500 hp and the MTX2-60 covers 3 500–6 000 hp. The frame size is chosen by motor power. The power modules are removable, and each contains a cooling system, IGBTs and DC link capacitors. A faulty module is replaced as a whole, so repair time is shorter and the range of spare parts is smaller.
The first generation MTX has a hybrid NEMA 3R enclosure. The drive compartment is cooled by forced air and the transformer compartment by natural convection, with an operating temperature range from −20 to +50 °C. The hybrid layout separates the heat flows of the power section and the transformer. The MTX power is 500–3 000 hp at 4 160 V. The drive has eight digital inputs, six digital outputs, two analog inputs and eight analog outputs.
Both series have a built-in phase-shifting isolation transformer, and the harmonics meet IEEE 519-2014. Connection is made on the principle of three cables in and three cables out. The multilevel output works without filters with existing motors, and the synchronous transfer function switches several motors between the drive and the line when one drive accelerates several units in turn. The input disconnect is lockable and interlocked with the vacuum contactor, the oil-filled capacitors are designed for 20 years, and a precharge circuit is provided.
Typical applications are pipeline and water conduit pumping stations, oil and gas fields, mining and quarry conveyors, crushers and mills. At such sites the drive often stands directly on the pad next to the motor. It is made by the Motors & Drives division of the company's Houston (USA) subsidiary. The products are tested in in-house laboratories accredited to ISO 9001:2015, NVLAP and UL, and service centers operate in Houston and Edmonton.

Questions and answers
What is the power range of the MTX2 and MTX drives?
The MTX2-15 covers 500–1 500 hp, the MTX2-60 covers 3 500–6 000 hp and the MTX covers 500–3 000 hp, all for 4 160 V.
In what climate conditions does the MTX2 work?
At ambient temperatures from −45 to +50 °C in a UL Type 3R, 4 or 4X enclosure. An air-conditioned E-house is not needed.
How is drive repair time reduced?
The power modules are removable, and each contains IGBTs, a cooling system and DC link capacitors. A module is replaced as a whole, so fewer spare parts are needed.
