MPC — medium-voltage momentary voltage dip compensator, 3.3/6.6 kV, 0.5–12 MVA
A compensator of momentary voltage dips for 3.3/6.6 kV medium-voltage networks rated 500–12,000 kVA. A battery or supercapacitor energy store and a high-speed switch separate the load from the grid within 1 ms. The unit protects critical plant loads from dips and production stoppages.

Description
The MPC (Momentary Voltage Dip Multiple Power Compensator) consists of a bidirectional converter, an energy store (storage battery or supercapacitors) and a high-speed switch (HSS). It eliminates voltage dips in the plant supply and works as a backup energy source. In this way the MPC prevents damage to critical equipment and production stoppages during momentary dips.
In normal mode the load is fed from the grid through the closed high-speed switch, a hybrid of a semiconductor and a mechanical switch, and the system efficiency is 99 %. During a voltage dip the switch separates the load from the grid within 1 ms, and the converter changes to inverter mode, feeding the load from the energy store. The standard compensation time is 10 seconds with a battery and 1 second with supercapacitors (EDLC); with a complete loss of voltage, compensation of more than 10 seconds is possible. The system withstands repeated lightning strikes and repeated dips and can switch to supply from an emergency generator.
The MPC 1000 is available with ratings of 500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 kVA, the MPC 3000 with 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000, 10,000 and 12,000 kVA. Input and output are three-phase three-wire, 6600 or 3300 V ±10 %, 50 or 60 Hz ±5 %. The DC link (energy store) voltage is 500–725 V.
In inverter mode voltage stability is ±5 %, the load power factor is 0.8 (range 0.7–1.0), voltage THD is no more than 3 % with a linear load, unbalance is no more than ±5 % at a load unbalance of up to 30 %, and recovery after transients takes no more than 50 ms. Cooling is forced air, temperature is 0–40 °C (average 25 °C for the energy store), humidity 30–90 % non-condensing, altitude up to 1000 m. Installation is intended indoors, free of corrosive gases and dust, and outdoor installation is discussed separately.
The compensator is used in production sensitive to voltage dips (semiconductors, chemicals, precision engineering, data centers) and to protect critical medium-voltage loads at plant substations. The manufacturer considers the MPC together with static UPS units as elements of a power supply protection architecture.
