Description
Medium-voltage variable frequency drives are intended for adjustable-speed control of synchronous and induction motors rated from 3.3 to 11 kV. They are used in any industrial and power installations, including compressors, pumps, fans and test benches. An adjustable-speed drive allows the motor speed to be changed smoothly and matched to the process mode. In pumping and compressor plants the motor speed is varied to suit the required output, and on test benches the required rotation modes are set.
The drives are built on pulse-width modulation (PWM) circuits with IGBT modules. The output inverter has a three- or five-level topology. These topologies differ in the number of voltage levels at the inverter output, and the more levels there are, the closer the voltage waveform is to a sine wave. The multilevel circuit produces an output voltage close to sinusoidal and reduces the stress on the motor insulation.
The input rectifier is either a diode type (DFE) or an active type (AFE). A diode rectifier passes energy only from the grid to the drive. An active rectifier allows energy to be returned to the grid and reduces the impact of the drive on power quality. With an active rectifier, the energy returned by the motor is fed back to the grid, and the drive has less effect on the supply network and other consumers.
The control systems of these drives are based on standard and open (open source) solutions wherever possible. This approach makes long-term maintenance and upgrades easier throughout the service life of the drive.
The manufacturer supplies the drives both separately and as part of "motor + drive + auxiliary equipment" packages. Such packages are its main specialization: a powerful electrical machine, a drive and auxiliary systems are combined into one energy conversion system. One example is the drive upgrade for the water company of Ile-de-France (SEDIF). Besides medium voltage, the manufacturer also makes low-voltage and special marine drives, but they are not part of this item. Medium-voltage drives are one of the three lines of the manufacturer's frequency drives. The model and rating are selected for the specific motor. The source does not give specific power ranges for medium-voltage drives.

Questions and answers
What voltage are the drives made for?
From 3.3 to 11 kV, for synchronous and induction motors.
What is the difference between the DFE and AFE versions?
DFE has a diode input rectifier, AFE an active one. The active rectifier returns energy to the grid and reduces the impact of the drive on power quality.
What is the inverter topology?
Pulse-width modulation on IGBT modules with a three- or five-level output inverter topology. The output voltage waveform is close to sinusoidal.
