Description
Marine variable frequency drives rated 1 to 10 MW are intended for electric propulsion systems of ships and naval vessels. This range also includes military versions for multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machines. The drives complement propulsion motors from the same company, and together they form a complete electric propulsion system: the machine, the drive and the auxiliary equipment come from a single supplier.
The multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors that the company uses on FREMM frigates and submarines require specialised drives. A multiphase design improves fault tolerance, because the drive can keep running when some of the phases fail. It also reduces torque ripple, which matters for the acoustic stealth of a warship.
Wherever possible, the drive control systems are built on standard and open solutions. This simplifies maintenance throughout the service life of the vessel. The company developed the control systems for these drives itself. They rely on standard and open solutions, and the company's main priorities in this field are life-cycle management and continuity of operation. For marine and military applications this matters, because the drive operates throughout the entire service life of the vessel.
The marine range is part of the company's wider line of frequency converters for synchronous and asynchronous machines. It includes low-voltage drives of 1–3 MW, including those for direct drive wind turbines (direct drive), and medium-voltage drives for 3.3–11 kV with PWM IGBT and DFE or AFE topologies with 3 and 5 levels. The 1–10 MW marine version, including military solutions, is listed separately.
The company supplies the French Navy and takes part in national naval sovereignty programmes, including the third-generation SNLE 3G nuclear ballistic missile submarines and the new-generation PA-NG aircraft carrier, for which it will supply integrated systems. It also works in civil shipbuilding, including cruise ships and ship retrofits. Propulsion system tests are carried out on the company's platforms, where three new machines have been installed to power submarine propulsion motors.

Questions and answers
What is the power range of the marine variable frequency drives?
From 1 to 10 MW. This is a dedicated marine range for propulsion motors.
Do the drives work with multiphase permanent magnet motors?
Yes, military versions are available for multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machines. A multiphase design improves fault tolerance and reduces torque ripple.
What is the control system based on?
On standard and open solutions, as far as possible. This makes long-term maintenance easier throughout the service life of the vessel.
