Description

HyCon Thyricon is a family of excitation systems for synchronous hydrogenerators and motors. The system supplies current to the field winding and regulates stator voltage and reactive power, including limiting and protection functions. The manufacturer is among the largest producers of hydrogenerators, with about 40 000 generators and turbines in operation. Thyricon uses standard industrial components with worldwide support, and all cabinets undergo factory testing before shipment.

The family has four versions. Thyricon 300 consists of a single cabinet with an IGBT rectifier for a current of up to 150 A and a voltage of up to 600 V, with no rectifier redundancy or (1+1). Thyricon 400 occupies 1–3 cabinets and has a thyristor bridge for a current of up to 3000 A and a voltage of up to 2000 V. Thyricon 500 consists of 4–5 cabinets, with a current of up to 3000 A and bridge redundancy (1+1). Thyricon 600 occupies 5–7 cabinets, with a current of up to 10 000 A, a voltage of up to 2000 V, (N+1) redundancy and forced cooling. The field breaker is a contactor, a moulded-case circuit breaker, or an air circuit breaker or DC contactor with a discharge contact, on the AC or DC side. The controllers are industrial PLCs with optional redundancy.

In a static system the rotor winding is fed directly from a fully controlled thyristor bridge in a self-excitation arrangement. This gives high dynamic performance, forcing and de-excitation, rotor temperature estimation and stable operation during deep voltage dips. A brushless system with an AC exciter and rotating diodes on the shaft has no slip rings or brushes, and is used for high-speed horizontal machines and hydrogenerators.

The digital regulator provides AVR with a PID law, manual field current regulation (FCR), and reactive power and power factor control. It includes the PSS2C power system stabilizer, limiters (V/Hz, stator and rotor currents), reactive and active current compensation for parallel operation of up to four machines on one unit transformer, and smooth transitions between modes. Electrical braking, line charging and black start, back-to-back and SFC starting, FVR and FCS test modes and an event log are supported. The software is built to IEEE standards. The systems are installed at new plants, in modernization and in reconstruction.

Questions and answers

What currents and voltages does the Thyricon family cover?

Thyricon 300 is rated for a current of up to 150 A and a voltage of up to 600 V. Versions 400, 500 and 600 have a voltage of up to 2000 V, and the current is up to 3000 A (400 and 500) and up to 10 000 A (600).

Is there redundancy of the rectifier and controllers?

Bridge redundancy depends on the version. Thyricon 300 has none or (1+1), Thyricon 500 has (1+1), Thyricon 600 has (N+1). Redundancy of controllers and cooling is available as an option.

How does a static system differ from a brushless one?

In a static system the rotor winding is fed by a fully controlled thyristor bridge in a self-excitation arrangement. A brushless system with an AC exciter and rotating diodes on the shaft has no slip rings or brushes.
