Description
PowerDuo combines in one system the functions of the Thyricon generator excitation system and the GoDigital digital turbine governor. The product belongs to the manufacturer's automation family alongside the Control System plant control system and is intended for controlling the speed and voltage of a hydro unit as a single object. It is the result of more than 150 years of the manufacturer's experience in generation and turbine governing.
Compared with separate excitation and turbine governing systems from one or several suppliers, the combined solution, according to the manufacturer, costs less from the very start of the project. It has fewer operating components, so the risk of failures is lower and overall speed and voltage control is simpler. The combination also provides additional tools for optimising the operation and maintenance of the turbine and generator.
The system is built on a standard industrial controller. All functions can be edited directly in the HMI panel. Graphical programming tools are available, including an animated generator capability curve. Redundancy concepts for the rectifier and controllers, remote diagnostics and advanced functions such as combinator (cam curve) optimisation are provided.
PowerDuo is suitable for Francis, Kaplan, bulb and Pelton turbines, complies with international standards, integrates easily into plant control systems and supports standard industrial communication protocols. The excitation part is based on Thyricon, where the rotor winding is fed directly by a fully controlled thyristor bridge in a self-excitation arrangement. The power section of such a system is independent of the rest of the plant, so excitation works even during deep voltage dips in the grid. The manufacturer has been developing the Go family of governors for more than 130 years, and its automation has already been supplied in more than 7,000 complete systems at almost 3,200 power plants. It is recommended for new and refurbished hydropower plants where compactness and a single point of responsibility for unit control are important.
The manufacturer's automation family also covers a protection system, telecommunications and access security, as well as the OnCare.Health monitoring system. Such a control, excitation and governing system makes it possible to build plant automation from components of one manufacturer with open interfaces to higher-level systems.
