Description

HIVECTOL-HVI is a series of medium-voltage frequency converters with a multilevel IGBT circuit for direct supply of induction and synchronous motors without an output transformer. The converter consists of three main parts: a phase-shifting multi-winding isolation transformer, an inverter section of series-connected inverter cells and a control cabinet. Each cell contains a diode rectifier and an IGBT inverter and is fed from a separate secondary winding of the transformer. The cells work in multiplex mode and form a stepped output voltage close to a sine wave.

As a result the load on the motor insulation is reduced, and the converter can be used with both new and existing standard high-voltage motors. The phase-shifting transformer keeps the level of current harmonics in the network below the IEEE 519 (2022) limits without line filters, with a 36-pulse circuit. The power factor is not lower than 0.95, and efficiency is up to 97% including the transformer. The range covers output voltages of 2.4–6.6 kV, and in high-power versions up to 13.8 kV. Output frequency is up to 75 Hz, protection is IP20 with an optional upgrade, and cooling is forced air.

Sensorless vector control holds speed to ±0.5% (±0.1% with a sensor) and allows heavy machines to be started with 200% torque. The patented scheme of external capacitor precharging from a separate 380–480 V source reduces the number of components and the transformer magnetizing inrush current by about 87%. The cell rotation function equalizes heating and loading of the cells. Automatic restart after a short loss of supply is provided. Overload capacity is 110% for 60 s, and the catalog also gives 125% for 60 s for some versions.

The new low-power version is built in a single cabinet, is about 43% lighter than the previous one and can connect to IoT through an optional PLC. The manufacturer has more than 80 years of experience in adjustable drives. HIVECTOL-HVI has been supplied since 1999, and in 2001 an 8 MVA converter was delivered for a thermal power plant. The standards are IEC, JIS, JEC, JEM, IEEE 519 and JEAG 9702-2018. Applications are forced-draft and induced-draft fans of power plant boilers, feed and circulation pumps, nuclear power plant pumps, compressors, rubber mixers, extruders, mills, cement industry kilns and water utilities.

Questions and answers

What output voltages and ratings does HIVECTOL-HVI have?

The rated output voltage is 2.4, 3.0, 3.3, 4.16, 6.0 and 6.6 kV, and in the high-power version also 10, 11 and 13.8 kV. The rating across the range is from 180 to 8800 kVA.

Can the converter be connected to an existing motor?

Yes. The output voltage is stepped and close to a sine wave, so the load on the insulation is low, and the converter works with existing standard high-voltage motors without an output transformer.

Which limits do the network harmonics meet, and what is the power factor?

The harmonic level is below the IEEE 519 (2022) limits without line filters, with a 36-pulse circuit. The power factor is not lower than 0.95 at rated load.
