FPC full-power frequency converter for wind turbines and renewable
FPC is a full-power frequency converter through which a permanent magnet wind turbine generator rated from 0.5 to 5 MW delivers its entire power to the grid. It is used in wind, tidal and hydrokinetic installations and in energy storage systems.

Description
FPC full-power frequency converters connect to the grid the generators of wind turbines and other renewable installations with variable speed, primarily synchronous permanent magnet machines. The entire generator power passes through the converter. The rotor speed is fully decoupled from the grid frequency, and the turbine runs at the most favorable tip speed ratio across the whole wind speed range.
The converter forms the current into the grid with set active and reactive components. In combination with a PMG it meets grid code requirements: voltage dip ride-through (fault ride-through) and 100 % reactive power compensation. In 2012 the company presented a new FPC series for wind power with improved voltage dip ride-through. The manufacturer states that the PMG and FPC pair gives a higher overall drive train efficiency and increases annual energy production.
The largest project concerns Goldwind. More than 6000 liquid-cooled converters have been supplied for its 1.5 MW wind turbines. This is a serial project, not individual machines. The first contract was signed in 2008, and the mark of 6000 deliveries was reached in 2015. FPCs were also part of complete "PMG + FPC" drive train packages of 0.7, 1.5, 3, 4.25 and 5 MW for the turbines of ScanWind, PROKON, Dongfang, Chongqing Haizhuang, Taiyuan Heavy Industry and Garuda. In such packages the generator and converter are matched to each other at the factory.
Outside wind power, a 500 kW converter operates on the floating hydrokinetic Water Wall Turbine installation (Canada), which extracts energy from fast water currents. For the Japanese startup Exergy the company developed a converter for a proton battery energy storage unit. Drives are tested in the company's own Large Drive Test Center in Lappeenranta, with a capacity of up to 18 MW, and on test benches in Vaasa.
The field of application covers multi-megawatt wind turbines, tidal and hydrokinetic installations and energy storage. By deliveries, the power range is from 0.5 to 5 MW per installation. The liquid-cooled version is proven on serial 1.5 MW wind turbines.

Questions and answers
Which generators is the FPC intended for?
Primarily for synchronous permanent magnet generators of wind turbines and other renewable installations with variable speed. The entire generator power passes through the converter.
What grid requirements does the converter meet?
In combination with a PMG, the wind turbine rides through voltage dips and provides 100 % reactive power compensation. The series with improved dip ride-through was presented in 2012.
What serial delivery experience does the FPC have?
More than 6000 liquid-cooled converters have been supplied for Goldwind 1.5 MW wind turbines. FPCs were also part of drive train packages from 0.7 to 5 MW.
