Description
The system is offered primarily for refurbishing hydro generators but, according to the manufacturer's description, it can be installed on any old generator with a static excitation system. Typical sites are small hydropower plants and generators of industrial power plants where thyristor excitation is being rebuilt. The generator itself stays in place, and the control system and power converter are changed.
The system combines two proven technologies of the manufacturer. The digital automatic voltage regulator D550 or D700, of the company's own design, is responsible for the control algorithms. It measures the generator voltage and generates the setpoint for the converter, which changes the current in the rotor winding. The Mentor DC converter serves as the power stage and feeds a continuous current of up to 900 A into the excitation winding under control of the regulator.
The system functions are as follows: automatic or manual voltage regulation; matching of generator and grid voltages before connecting in parallel; regulation of cos φ, power factor or reactive power (kVAr). The cos φ and reactive power modes are needed when the generator works in parallel with the grid and the grid operator sets the reactive power exchange. The system performs advanced fault detection and data logging, and the operator works with a touch panel.
The D550 regulator has a regulation accuracy of ±0.25 %, is optimised for grid-parallel operation and complies with grid codes, including VDE-AR-N 4110 and 4105. It has reverse active and reactive power alarms, EASYLOG logging modules and a black start module for starting the generator without an external grid. The D700 also has an accuracy of ±0.25 %, works in the frequency range of 10–400 Hz, has configurable inputs and outputs with basic logic functions, USB or Ethernet communication and additional protocols as an option. Both regulators are set up with the EasyReg Advanced software.
Selection requires the rated data of the generator and of the existing excitation system, above all the rotor current and voltage, as well as the grid operator's regulation requirements. The choice between D550 and D700 depends on the functions required, grid code requirements and communication protocols. The continuous current limit of 900 A determines the range of generators to which the system applies.
