Description

DFIG converters are intended for wind turbines with a doubly-fed induction generator. The generator stator is connected directly to the grid, and the rotor is fed from a dual-channel frequency converter through which only part of the turbine power passes. This arrangement allows operation at variable rotational speed, control of active and reactive power, and compliance with grid code requirements with a relatively small installed converter power.

The DFIG DAC family covers converters for turbines of 850 kW, 2.6, 3.4 and 4.5 MW. The newest model, DFIG 6.0, is designed for wind turbines up to 6.6 MW. The converters operate at ambient temperatures up to 50 °C. Cooling is combined, liquid with forced air, so the high-power cabinets do not need a separate heat exchange circuit on the turbine site. The stator delivers most of the power to the grid without conversion, so losses in the converter are lower than in a full-conversion scheme. The size of the converter is determined only by the share of power passing through the rotor. It controls the rotor current and maintains the required generator mode as wind speed changes.

The basis of the converter is the CCU control unit of in-house design, proven in service. According to the manufacturer, its mean time between failures (MTBF) is 40 years, based on statistics from more than 2000 units and more than 40 million operating hours. The manufacturer has supplied more than 65 GW of converters for wind power.

The generator plus converter systems are tested on the company's own test benches in Madrid with a capacity of up to 10 MW, including full-power benches of 3.5 and 6 MW with a virtual 50/60 Hz grid. The benches are used to check ride-through of voltage dips and overvoltages (LVRT/HVRT), operation in weak grids, PQVf characteristics, thermal modes, efficiency and harmonics. The converters for wind turbines are manufactured in Valencia.

Applications are megawatt-class wind turbines with doubly-fed generators, and modernisation and replacement of converters on turbines in operation. When replacing, the turbine power, generator parameters and local grid code requirements are matched.
