DECS-450 — excitation controller for systems with positive and negative field forcing
A microprocessor excitation controller for systems with positive or positive and negative field forcing. It generates the control signal for an external power converter, so it suits synchronous machines of any power. It is used on turbo and hydro generators, synchronous condensers and large synchronous motors.
- Purpose
- control of an external excitation power converter of a synchronous machine of any power
- Forcing
- positive and positive / negative
- Redundancy
- many schemes to choose from
- PSS
- built-in (option), accelerating power integral

Description
The DECS-450 controls and monitors the output of a synchronous machine. The controller signal goes to an external power converter, which supplies direct current to the main excitation winding or to the exciter winding. The power part is performed by the converter, so the regulator is compatible with machines of any power. The manufacturer recommends the DECS-450 as a replacement for the discontinued DECS-300 and DECS-400, the SSE regulator and the PSS-100 stabilizer.
The controller is supplied in various configurations to suit specific requirements and redundancy schemes, with both standard and made-to-order engineered versions. There are many redundancy schemes, which increase system availability. The set of limiters is coordinated with the protections, so the machine remains in safe operating modes. Protective functions are built in. The regulator has two sets of gain coefficients depending on the load, and two sets of limiter and protection settings for different power system modes. Starting is smooth, without voltage overshoot.
For fault analysis the controller records the sequence of events and performs oscillography during disturbances. Time synchronization allows oscillograms to be matched with other devices. Real-time monitoring and built-in test tools simplify commissioning. An optional power system stabilizer works on the principle of the accelerating power integral and damps local, inter-system and inter-unit oscillations; it includes a white noise generator and phase compensation tools.
Settings are made in the BESTCOMSPlus® program with the BESTlogic™Plus graphical programmable logic, automatic PID coefficient selection and auto-tuning. The built-in offline simulator checks the logic without equipment. The manufacturer has its own engineering, procurement, manufacturing and test capacities and produces regulators at plants in Highland, Illinois and Taylor, Texas.
Application example. An obsolete static excitation system was completely replaced with the DECS-450 in made-to-order cabinets that replicate the cable entry points and the placement on the existing foundation. The project was carried out with a full set of engineering work and supervised installation. The DECS-450 belongs to the third generation of digital DECS controllers for static excitation systems. Earlier models were in serial production for 15–20 years and were then repaired for as long as spare parts were available. Analog SSE systems have been in service for over 30 years. During upgrades often only the controller and the excitation circuit isolation module are replaced.
