Brushless exciters with rotating rectifier
Brushless exciters in the form of alternators with a rotating rectifier, for new synchronous machines and for replacing old exciters. A rectifier bridge on the shaft feeds DC to the rotor field winding without slip rings or brushes. Windings are impregnated under vacuum and pressure.

Description
Brushless exciters, which are alternators with a rotating rectifier, are designed and made in all types. They are used to equip new synchronous machines and to replace exciters and exciter generators (including DC machine exciters) on existing synchronous generators and motors of other makers.
The brushless exciter sits on the same shaft as the main machine. Its armature winding rotates together with the rotor, and the rectifier bridge on the shaft converts alternating current to direct current and feeds it straight into the rotor field winding. This eliminates the slip rings and brushes of the main machine and reduces maintenance.
The exciter field current is controlled by a voltage regulator, for example the digital GLOBALTA NG or HYDRALTA NG regulators with a built-in function for detecting rotating diode failures. For autonomous supply of the regulators, small permanent magnet pilot generators are made. Exciters differ in type and rating and are selected for the specific machine. All exciter windings are globally impregnated under vacuum and pressure (VPI), which extends their service life. The exciter works together with the voltage regulator, which changes the exciter field current and, through it, the current in the rotor of the main machine.
Upgrading excitation systems by replacing old exciters extends the service life of hydro and thermal power plant generators and industrial synchronous motors. The production base consists of four specialized plants in France (the main site, Champagne-sur-Seine, Carquefou, Étupes) and a plant in India (Vadodara). The main site has a 5.4 m impregnation tank, 55 overhead cranes, four test platforms and four balancing benches.
The company's management system is certified by DNV to ISO 9001, with the certificate valid from 23 February 2026 to 30 September 2027. The certification covers design, manufacture, installation, maintenance and refurbishment of energy conversion and generation systems, and of rotating and static electrical machines for power generation, shipbuilding and process industries. The certified activity also covers rotating electrical machines with associated control and regulation equipment for industrial, railway, hydraulic, thermal and nuclear sectors.

Questions and answers
What is the operating principle of a brushless exciter?
The armature winding rotates together with the rotor, and the rectifier bridge on the shaft converts alternating current to direct current and feeds it to the rotor field winding. Slip rings and brushes of the main machine are not needed.
Can the exciter on an existing machine be replaced?
Yes, the exciters are also used to replace exciters and exciter generators, including DC machine exciters, on existing synchronous generators and motors.
Which regulator controls the exciter?
A voltage regulator, for example the digital GLOBALTA NG or HYDRALTA NG with detection of rotating diode failures. Permanent magnet pilot generators are available for autonomous supply of the regulator.
