Thyristor units for AC submerged arc furnaces (up to 40 kA, 2400 V)
Single-phase thyristor units modulate the electrode current of an AC submerged arc furnace. Rated values reach 40 kA and 2400 V AC, with up to 8 thyristors in parallel in each leg. Cooling is forced water, and current and electrode position control can be integrated through the ARTICS platform.

Description
The thyristor units are intended for AC submerged arc furnaces (SAF). They are developed on the basis of the manufacturer's many years of experience in high-current converter systems. The unit modulates the furnace electrode current and brings the system close to unity power factor. This reduces reactive power consumption and load fluctuations. The current of an electrode immersed in the charge determines the thermal regime of the furnace, so its control is among the unit's main functions.
The unit is single-phase, with thyristors connected in anti-parallel, that is, two groups conduct in opposite half-cycles of the mains. Rated values reach 40 kA and 2400 V AC. Each leg can have up to 8 thyristors (SCR) in parallel, and the maximum current unbalance factor between them is 1.10, so the unevenness of current sharing is limited. Current transformers for measurement are installed on each leg, so the current distribution between parallel thyristors can be monitored. Cooling is forced water, which allows losses to be removed compactly at high currents.
Through its own ARTICS automation platform the manufacturer can provide integrated control of the current and of the furnace electrode position. Besides the unit itself, there is experience in designing the complete electrical part of high-current installations. It includes transformers and HV/MV switchgear, rectifiers and thyristor units, harmonic filters, control panels and monitoring systems. Supervision of installation and commissioning on site by the manufacturer's specialists is also offered. The scope of supply is agreed with the furnace project and its electrical scheme. In the electrode circuit the unit works as a power regulator: the thyristors control the current, the current transformers on each leg provide signals for measurement and control, and water cooling removes the losses that arise at high currents.
Applications include submerged arc furnaces for the production of ferroalloys, silicon, calcium carbide and other electrothermal processes in the metallurgical and chemical industries. The manufacturer's quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. Additional information on power quality is given in a separate manufacturer's brochure.
