Surge arresters (MOV) 69–765 kV, polymer and for GIS

High-voltage surge arresters on zinc oxide varistors for networks of 69–765 kV. They protect substation and transmission line equipment against lightning and switching overvoltages. The company installed its first arrester in 1911.

Description

The arresters are made in versions for gas-insulated substations (GIS), with porcelain and polymer housings, and as line arresters for overhead lines. The range of 69–765 kV covers networks from regional to trunk. Units for GIS, open-air substations and overhead lines differ in housing design and connection method. The manufacturer issues separate catalogs for arresters up to 242 kV and up to 550 kV. The range also includes arresters for distribution networks, substations, DC converter stations and railways.

The core of the unit is zinc oxide varistors with high protective characteristics. At operating voltage the varistor conducts almost no current, and during an overvoltage its resistance falls sharply and the surge is discharged to ground. The compact and light design reduces transport costs and the installation area required without losing protective properties. Compact units are easier to place in GIS and on tight open-air substations.

Polymer arresters come in two versions. The first, with directly molded silicone, is rated up to 275 kV, and the second, with a composite insulating tube, is for 500 kV. The polymer housing reduces weight and size and simplifies installation, and such a unit is easier to transport. When pressure rises inside, it does not scatter dangerous fragments, as porcelain housings can, and it withstands seismic loads better. For substations in seismic regions and near equipment that must be protected from fragments, this is a weighty argument.

Arresters are installed to protect power transformers, GIS and circuit breakers at substations of 110–750 kV, on transmission lines, at HVDC converter substations and at traction substations. In GIS the arrester is placed in a grounded gas-insulated enclosure, while open-air substations use porcelain and polymer units. Line arresters are mounted on overhead line towers to limit lightning flashovers of the insulation. HVDC converter substations and traction substations have their own requirements for protection levels, so the range includes separate versions for them.

For more than one hundred years the company has developed overvoltage protection technology. Transformers, GIS and surge arresters are made at the Hamakawasaki plant in Kawasaki, and the high-voltage test laboratories are JAB accredited. Since 1978 the company has delivered abroad more than 100 turnkey substations of up to 800 kV.

Questions and answers

What voltage classes are the surge arresters made for?

The high-voltage arresters are rated for networks from 69 to 765 kV, and separate catalogs cover units up to 242 kV and up to 550 kV.

What polymer arrester versions are in the range?

With directly molded silicone up to 275 kV and with a composite insulating tube for 500 kV. The polymer housing is lighter than porcelain and does not scatter fragments.

What equipment are these arresters used for?

To protect power transformers, GIS and circuit breakers at substations of 110–750 kV, transmission lines, HVDC converter substations and traction substations.
