Description
WindCube 2.1 XP and WindCube Offshore are vertical profiling lidars based on Leosphere technology, which became part of the company in 2018. They are used for wind resource assessment and for supporting wind farm projects. A ground-based lidar replaces a very tall met mast. It measures wind speed and direction, vertical speed and turbulence intensity at 20 heights at once, and no permit to build a mast is needed. Lenders accept WindCube data as bankable.
The device works as a pulsed Doppler heterodyne lidar. It sends light pulses into the atmosphere at a high rate and receives the signal scattered by natural aerosols. The Doppler shift gives the wind speed, and the return time of the pulse determines the height, so the spatial resolution is the same along the whole profile. Clouds, fog or dust do not distort the measurements. Four inclined beams at 28° and one vertical beam measure the vertical component of the wind direction. A patented hybrid reconstruction algorithm and the FCR complex terrain recognition function improve reliability in hilly terrain.
The range is from 40 m to over 300 m, and up to 400 m for the WindCube 2.1 XP, which covers the whole rotor height range of 60–270 m. Wind speed of 0–49 m/s is reconstructed with an accuracy of 0.1 m/s, and direction of 0–360° with an accuracy of 2°. The speed uncertainty per IEC 61400-12-1 Ed.2 is 0.6–2.6 % depending on the height. WindCube was the first lidar to receive an IEC classification with an extended range of up to 200 m.
The power supply is 24.5–27 V DC or 100–240 V AC through an adapter, with a rated consumption of 45 W, so the lidar can run autonomously from solar panels. Communication is via LAN, USB, 3G/4G, Modbus RTU and Wi-Fi, with remote control through WindCube Insights. A 120 GB disk stores data for more than 5 years. Operating conditions are from −30 to +50 °C, altitude up to 3000 m, enclosure IP54, laser class 1M, weight 59 kg.
WindCube Offshore has a marine version in a corrosion-resistant enclosure for floating lidar systems, lighthouses, substations and vessels. New WindCube 2.1 XP units are supplied with 12 months of Compass Renewable service for data processing and analysis.

Questions and answers
What measurement range does the WindCube 2.1 XP have?
Up to 400 m, whereas the basic WindCube range is from 40 m to over 300 m. The lidar covers the whole rotor height range of 60–270 m.
What is the wind speed measurement accuracy?
Speed of 0–49 m/s is reconstructed with an accuracy of 0.1 m/s. The uncertainty is 0.6–2.6 % depending on the height per IEC 61400-12-1 Ed.2.
Can the lidar be powered autonomously at a wind farm site?
Yes, the rated consumption of 45 W allows it to be powered from solar panels. The standard supply is 24.5–27 V DC or 100–240 V AC through an adapter.
